Sunny’s POV
“You know what? You’re right, I think ice cream really helps a lot.” I said to Damon while we were eating ice cream inside an ice cream parlor.
“My mom used to buy me ice cream whenever I get hurt before. She always does that even when I’m already grown up. That’s why I get used of eating ice cream whenever I feel sad or hurt.”
I nodded, “I think your parents loves you so much. The care about you so much, and they are kind too. You are so lucky to have them.”
“You too. You are so lucky to have such great and funny parents. They are so entertaining and kind-hearted.” He said while eating his vanilla ice cream.
“But I’m not their favorite child. You know, my sister has always been the star of our family. The most favored and loved child while I’m the one who always get the left overs. I was always so envious because she easily gets what she wants, she can just beg and smile cutely and she’ll have it, while me, no matter what I do, even if I threaten them that I’ll jump off a cliff if they don’t give me what I want, they’ll just ignore me and scold me after for doing it.” I laughed. “I guess it’s really different when you’re the ugly one. You know, the one who gets less attention, the one who gets less compliment, and the one who gets compare to her sister when visitors come in.”
“Isn’t it nice to have a sibling?” Damon asked.
I shook my head. “It’s nice, not until you fall for the same person. And you know who’s gonna win his heart in the end.”
“Do you sometimes wish you didn’t have a sister at all?”
“Sometimes I wish I could just be an only child, but whenever I imagine my world without my annoying sister, I think it wouldn’t be that fun. We’ve been together for all of my life, we did the most stupid things, she was my only best friend, the one who knows me too well.”
“But you’re mad at her right now?”
I averted my gaze. “I just think it’s unfair for her to get married to the person that I love.”
“It’s unfair for her to marry the man that she loves? That’s not her fault anyway.”
“I know it’s not her fault but I still find it unfair that she always gets what she wants without trying really hard. I’ve been in love with Henry since the start. She only liked Henry when she knew that I like him. It’s so unfair… I think I love Henry more than she does. I know his favorite color, Mira doesn’t even know that. I know everything about Henry while Mira just… she only knows the basic.”
“And that’s what makes you think that you’re the only who deserves him?”
I looked at him, “Don’t I deserve Henry? Is it because I’m not as pretty as my sister? Because I’m not as smart as her? Because I don’t have everything that she has?”
I was surprised when Damon suddenly flicked my forehead.
“Ouch! That hurts!” I hissed.
“You know what the problem with you is?”
“H-Huh?”
“You always compare yourself to other people. You don’t have self-confidence; you don’t trust yourself.”
I was just looking at him. He looks so serious while he was talking. How unusual of him.
“You will never get happiness if you keep on comparing yourself to her. Who would even love someone who keeps on looking for the things that she doesn’t have? Henry didn’t love Eris just because she’s better than you, he didn’t love her because she’s more beautiful, or smarter. He loved her because she’s herself.”
“Why do you speak like an old man?” I asked him.
He glared at me then flicked my forehead again. “Because you’re an idiot.”
***
“Thanks for the ice cream, grandpa.” I said to Damon when we finally reached my house.
He glared at me, “At least I’m a handsome grandpa.”
“I didn’t say that.”
“Shut up. By the way, will you at least greet them?”
“Huh?”
“Your sister and her boyfriend. I mean, you can’t just act grumpy until they finally get married.”
I heaved a sigh, “Well I guess I don’t really have a choice. How about you? Will you go to their wedding?”
“If they invite me, then why not?”
“You’re a loser.”
“And so you are, idiot.” He said then we both laughed.
I waved my hand at him, “Bye, don’t forget to say sorry to your parents for me.”
“Okay.” He said then he started walking away.
I just smiled while watching him. That dude might be so over-confident and asshole, but I think he’s quite nice too. I never imagined him to have such deep thoughts in his head. I’ve always thought he was an idiot. I think he wanted to cry, maybe he just couldn’t show it. Maybe he’ll cry himself to sleep later like a baby that he is.
Ah, just thinking about that already makes me want to burst into laughter. I wonder what he looks like whenever he cries. I’m sure he looks like a crying racoon.
I was about to go inside our house when I suddenly saw Henry standing outside, leaning on his car as if he’s waiting for someone. Maybe he’s waiting for Mira. I shrugged and started walking towards the house when he suddenly spoke. “Sunny.”
No, Sunny. Don’t look at him. Don’t ever try to look at him. He’s not yours, he will never be yours. He’s already getting married with your older sister.
“Sunny, can we talk for a while?”
“H-Henry, I-I—
“Please?”
I heaved a sigh. How can I even say no to him?
“O-Okay…”
Then a huge smile appeared on his face. A smile that would never be mine. “Thank you.”
