Reyansh’s Perspective:
“Sorry… I didn’t mean to come off so strong,” he sighed, his anger visibly deflating, “It’s just that it reminded me of her. She was so passionate and loved the animals so much,” a smile appeared on his face, tinged with sadness, “She always advocated for their rights and believed that they shouldn’t be treated as property. I couldn’t control my emotions as it reminded me of her and her love and compassion for them.”
Reyansh’s words resonated with me, and I couldn’t help but feel a surge of empathy for him. I knew how deeply he cared for her and her dedication to animal welfare. Her absence had left a void that was difficult to fill.
I recalled how she used to spend hours volunteering at animal shelters, tending to injured and abandoned animals with the utmost care. She would often remark that treating an animal as just another object or resource went against the very essence of its existence.
With a gentle touch, I put my hand on Reyansh’s shoulder, offering him some comfort. “I understand,” I said softly, my voice filled with empathy, assuring him that his emotions were valid and understandable.
After some moments, Reyansh collected his thoughts and tried to speak again. His voice held a hint of nostalgia and fondness, as he delved into their shared memories.
“Don’t you remember when we were young, and she would take us to the nearest animal sanctuary every summer?” Reyansh reminisced, a wistful smile playing on his lips.
A wave of memories flooded my mind, and a smile formed on my face as well. Those summers spent at the animal sanctuary were etched deeply into my heart. The sheer joy and enthusiasm in her eyes, followed by tears of empathy for animals in pain, created a bittersweet symphony of emotions.
“She would cry uncontrollably when she saw any animal in distress,” I added, my voice filled with warmth and nostalgia. “Her heart would ache for those animals, and she would do everything in her power to help them.”
I nodded, a mixture of sadness and fondness crossing my face. I had always tried to be her protector, shielding her from the world’s harsh realities and being a pillar of support in her moments of vulnerability.
Hridhan, who had been listening intently, looked out of the window with a distant gaze. The memories had stirred up his emotions, and he struggled to contain the tears threatening to spill over. Sensing his need for solitude, he quietly excused himself, leaving the room to seek solace in his thoughts and emotions.
As I sat there, my thoughts were interrupted by my playful puppy, jumping onto my lap. Seeking solace and affection, he brought a smile to my face. I stroked his soft fur, cherishing the comfort he provided.
“I don’t think I can call you Retriever anymore,” I whispered to my furry friend, my voice filled with affection and playfulness. He tilted his head, seemingly understanding the change in our dynamic.
“No, you can’t call him that from now onwards,” Hridhan’s voice interjected, filled with playful threats and genuine concern. “And if I hear you calling him that again, I may forget you’re my friend and take you to our safe house, where you’ll meet an unexpected fate at my hands.”
I chuckled, amused by his response, and replied, “Okay, I promise not to call him Retriever anymore. But he does need a name that reflects his loyalty and protective nature.”
Hridhan patted his loyal companion and suggested, “How about Guardian?”
I couldn’t help but laugh at the suggestion. “Are you serious right now? Who calls their dog Guardian?” I teased, enjoying the banter.
Hridhan looked at me, raising an eyebrow. “Do you have any better ideas?” he asked, challenging me. When met with silence, he continued, “Thought so, Guardian seems fitting for him.”
“Okay, Guardian, it is,” I agreed, patting him on the head. Guardian responded with a wag of his tail, his eyes brimming with joy. His presence brought comfort and a sense of protection to both of us.
Engrossed in our playful banter, I was interrupted when Hridhan put his hand on my shoulder. His touch brought my attention back to the moment, and I met his gaze, curious about what he had to say.
“My friend, I think you’re forgetting something important that you promised this morning,” he said in a serious and calm tone, hinting at the impending conversation we needed to have.
I paused for a moment, knowing exactly what he was referring to, but deciding to play dumb. “I don’t know what you’re referring to. Leave me be. I’m busy with Guardian. He needs my attention and care right now. We’ll talk later.”
Deep down, I knew I couldn’t continue to avoid the conversation. Hridhan walked towards me, and to my surprise, Guardian, the little traitor, abandoned my lap and happily wagged his tail while settling into Hridhan’s lap.
“Now you don’t have to worry about Guardian. He’s in better hands,” Hridhan stated with a mocking smile. “Therefore, it would be better for you to fulfill your promise. And don’t you dare forget the dinner plans we made this morning?”
I glared at Guardian, who now avoided my gaze, feeling a sense of betrayal. Pointing my finger at him, I half-jokingly said, “You little traitor. You caused all the trouble, and now you’re betraying me. I’ll remember this. And I’ll take my revenge on you, most unexpectedly and creatively possible. Just wait and see.”
Unfazed by my playful threat, Guardian simply wagged his tail and tilted his head innocently, as if he were completely oblivious to my words. I nodded at him nonchalantly, accepting the challenge, and decided to put aside my playful mood to fulfill the promise I made earlier.
As I turned to leave the room, I couldn’t help but look back at Hridhan and Guardian. They were engrossed in their little world, finding solace and comfort in each other’s presence. Hridhan, with Guardian by his side, had found a companion who could provide him with emotional support and help him navigate his vulnerabilities.
A smile graced my face as I witnessed the bonding between them. Hridhan had always kept his emotions guarded, but now, with Guardian on his side, I hoped he would find the strength to open up and share his feelings without fear of judgment or rejection.
“I want your special Paneer Lababdaar for dinner tonight,” Hridhan’s voice broke through my thoughts, bringing me back to the present moment.
I couldn’t help but respond with a touch of sarcasm, playing along with his request. “Anything else, your Highness?” I retorted, teasing him gently.
With dinner plans in mind, I left the room to clean up the mess Guardian had created before starting to prepare the special meal Hridhan had requested.

After enjoying a delicious dinner, Hridhan volunteered to do the dishes while I dried and put them away. We fell into a comfortable silence, finding solace and companionship in each other’s presence as we carried out the task.
Once the last plate was dried and put away, I knew it was time to have an important conversation with Hridhan. I spoke in a serious and calm tone, signaling the significance of what I was about to share.
“I need to talk to you about something,” I said, catching his attention. “Come to my office once we’re done here.”
Hridhan looked curious and a bit anxious at the same time. “What is it about?” he asked, his voice reflecting his anticipation and curiosity.
I turned to him, meeting his gaze, and revealed, “I met Aanya today. She was there to propose a business deal to me.”
Upon hearing her name, Hridhan’s expression changed, and a hint of unease washed over him.
