Daemon lifts the bags of food in his hand the moment he sees her go out of the gate of her family’s mansion to meet him outside.
He called her to inform him that he already arrived.
“I brought you food.”
In a daze, she stares at his smiling face who tries hard to cover up the sadness and bitterness behind them. She now realized more than ever that both of them were so similar with each other given their respective circumstances.
“Come on, let’s go home so we can eat,” he said and smiled at her.
Devon, in a burst of emotions after spending a day in their dark gloomy house ran towards her husband who welcomed her with open arms.
“Did something happen?” he asked, worried when sensing the turmoil in her presence.
She looked up to him and nodded. “I’ll tell you when we get home. I just want to get out of this place.”
“Come on.” Daemon took her hands in his and pulled her towards his car.
“I think they’re going to move Lucy to another place. They look threatened,” she said in between meals.
Daemon put down his knife to focus on her. “How did you know?”
“I’ve talked to Brian and his wife. I’d tried to provoke them and it worked. They looked threatened.”
He checked on her face and her arms for any sign of bruise or mark. “Are you okay? Did they hurt you?”
“I’m alright,” she assures him and remembers the news she just heard about Maddy and her husband.
“My men are already on the move. They’re already tailing the family since day one. They’ll let me know if something happens or if they change their course.”
She nodded wanting to ask how his day was given the change in his appearance but she decided she’ll save it for later. She wanted to make him feel good first.
“Daemon, how was your father?” she later asked when they’re tangled in the sheets, locked in an embrace, naked, and just coming down from their brain-wracking climax.
It took him a few minutes before answering her as if collecting his thoughts and asking himself where to start.
“He’s the epitome of a kind man. A philanthropist who only wants a better world for his son. Dad seems to want to help every struggling child out there he sees. He’s my role model. Avenging his death is the only reason why I entered this organized crime syndicate.”
“He’s the very opposite of my father,” she commented and looked up to him, “the kind of man I wished my dad to be.”
“And yet we both grew up the same, missing their versions that we wanted them to be.” Daemon caressed her face. “The moment we find our daughter and be reunited in our little family, I promise I’ll do my best to be a loving father to her. I’ll try hard to be the kind of father she can be proud of. I want her to be boastful of me to her friends. She’ll tell them that she’s got the coolest dad.”
Just imagining it happening already brought a smile into their faces. Emily would love that for sure. Every child in this world only wants loving parents.
“I’ll dissolve my group and retreat into silent living,” he confided.
Her mouth fell open when she heard that. Sitting on the bed while keeping the sheets to cover her breast, she gawked at him like that was the most incredible thing she has ever heard in all of her life.
“Are you for real? Are you really doing that?”
Daemon smiled and pulled her back to his body. “I don’t want my family to grow in this kind of environment, Devon.” He breathed in afterwards. “I knew everything. The driver of the vehicle you were riding that night of the accident left me a message after he killed himself due to guilt. It was all Maddy’s doing.”
Shocked, she sat back looking at him with an open mouth. So it was really her all along! Does it mean Maddy, Arianne, and her family were all conspiring against her?
“Are you okay?” she managed to ask Daemon despite all which greatly baffled him.
“Why are you asking me that? I should ask you that first. Are you okay, Devon?”
She didn’t say anything to process her mind and she realized one thing- this didn’t shake her as much as finding that her own family gave Emily to her brother. In fact, at some point, she thought that this could be a possibility given how Maddy obsesses for Daemon so much.
“You prized Maddy so much. You must be hurting now.”
“Not as hurt as I am when I found out about what she did to you and our child.”
Confused, she shot him a look. “What do you mean? What other things did she do to me?”
“She showed me a video of you walking away from the accident.”
“What?!” she racked her mind to recall if such a thing happened but she didn’t remember any. “I don’t remember it. I lost my consciousness for sure.”
“There’s a drug that makes you obey commands. She must have given you that.”
Yeah, she remembered stopping to eat and drink.
“Is that why you’re so angry at me? Do you also think that I corroborated with my family to gun you down?”
He eased her back to bed and held him tight against his heat. “In the past, yeah.”
Long silence passed through them before Daemon spoke.
“We can’t be this distracted about finding our child, Devon. We should focus.”
She agreed wholeheartedly. “We could still fix it… this… everything that happened. There’s still a chance we could straighten it all out. We’ll get our daughter back.” She turned to him and gave him a hopeful smile. “I know it will happen because I believe in you, Daemon. I believe in us.”
He leaned in to give her a kiss. Devon responded sincerely hoping that all they believed would come true.
They’ll get Emily back, have peace of mind, and live away from all of this chaos as one happy family.
