“Ma’am, Devon, this came in the mail today. It’s for you.”
A helper handed her a parcel while she’s sitting on the sofa in the living room trying to plan her next move.
She’s been doing her best to try to find evidence that her brother’s daughter is Emily but so far, she can’t find any. Daemon checked if Brian or any of her family left the country but no one went abroad.
So now they’re in a quagmire on what to do next. Would they continue chasing after her brother or would they move on to the next step?
“For me?”
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Oh, thank you.”
She got it and inspected the package. Her name as receiver is listed but the sender is anonymous.
“What is this? Should I open it? What if it’s something dangerous?”
She quickly set aside her doubts and proceeded into tearing the side of the packet. It’s an envelope and there’s a note attached on the paper.
“This is a DNA test result we conducted to prove that our child is mine, Devon. I know what you’re feeling now. It must have been horrible to lose a child. I sympathize with you because I’m also a mother but you can’t just shamelessly claim another daughter just because you lost yours. Leave us in peace.”
The test result shows that Lucy Farrows is Brian Farrows’ daughter.
The paternity probability is 99. 999 percent.
Running towards the gate, she asked the guard frantically while waving the package in her hand. “Who sent this?! Did you see anyone?”
“It’s only the courier, ma’am.”
She ran outside hoping to see the rider but the street didn’t have anyone in it.
“Damn it!”
Going back into the house, she crumpled the paper and threw it on the floor. She is so frustrated, her energy for the day drained out in a matter of seconds.
“I can’t just accept this, right? I have to take it with a grain of salt. They might have manipulated the result. This is not true. Her name is Emily, not Lucy,” she convinced herself.
“Hard to accept the truth, eh?”
She turned her back to the woman who spoke and saw Maddy in her signature little corporate dress walking towards her.
“What are you doing here?” she asked, facing her.
Maddy looked at her stressed face and snickered when she saw that she didn’t have any make-up on. “Visiting. Isn’t it obvious? And I would also like to hear a thank you from you. After all, you would not remember your memories had I not smashed your head.”
“If so, then do your business somewhere else. I have no time to chat with you.”
She pivoted her heels ready to leave but Maddy is not yet finished in her barrage of insults.
“Oh come on, Devon. Where are you going? Ah, I know. You’re going to search again for your lost baby girl, right. Aw, poor child. Mommy lost her.”
Devon’s feet stopped moving as her hands curled into a ball. One more word from her and she would really explode.
“If you don’t have anything good to say, then please, just leave me alone,” she said calmly to hide her storms inside.
With her hands crossed on her chest, Maddy slowly walked to her. “Why would I when this is yet another chance presented by fate for me to torment you? You stole Daemon from me so I’ll poke every fresh wound you have as a revenge.”
“You’re crazy, Maddy. Why are you pushing yourself to him when he doesn’t even want you? Besides, we’re married. You have no chance to be with him.”
She nodded, her face so far from agreeing. “Yes, you’re right. Daemon might no longer want me because of you but if I erase you out of the equation, he’ll be mine again. He’s just sticking with you because he felt guilty to. A couple’s relationship cannot just survive with guilt, pity, and searching for your dead child.”
“My Emily is not dead!” Devon screamed in her face, her whole body trembling. “My daughter is alive and she’s waiting for all of us to find her!”
“Oh yeah. So where is she now? If you can’t find her, then she’s as good as dead,” Maddy continued taunting her, enjoying her sudden outburst.
“Shut up!”
Devon raised her hand and slapped Maddy on the face but that didn’t stop her from provoking her. Devon is an unhinged woman. Everybody should see that.
“You are a lousy mother! You lost your baby, Devon.”
Devon covered her ears to trap the noise from entering her head. Why do people have to stress that fact?! Why do they have to repeat it over and over again? “I know so please just shut up! Shut up!”
“Maddy! What the hell are you doing here?!”
Daemon rushed into her side to check up on her.
“Devon, are you okay? Tell me what happened.”
She looked at him desperately. “I’m not a lousy mother, Daemon. I don’t want to lose her. I have no choice but to do that be-”
“Hey, listen.” Daemon cupped her face so that she could only focus on him. “Don’t believe her. She’s just messing with you. You don’t have to explain. I totally understand you. You are not a lousy mother, Devon. Please believe in me.”
Crying, she held onto him tightly. “But she’s telling the truth, Daemon. I’m really a useless mother. I lost our child!”
“No, you’re not.” He pulled her closer to his heat when she started shivering. His burning eyes connected with Maddy.
“Leave Maddy or you won’t like what I would do to you.”
She just smiled at Daemon and then took her time in opening the door.
“Just leave or do you want me to drag you?”
“I’ll be back,” she said, obviously teasing before leaving them alone.
When Devon calmed down a bit, she asked him to do something for her.
“Sure, I’ll do anything for you. What do you want me to do?”
Glistening with tears, Devon swallowed hard and requested one thing that she thought she would never want to ask. “I need to see the child. I have to confirm if she’s really Emily. We have to take the results ourselves just to make sure.”
Daemon fell silent thinking about the severity of what she wanted. “Do you want me to kidnap the child?”
Devon nodded. “Can you do that?”
It took a while for Daemon to provide an answer. With certainty, he agreed. “I can do it. For you.”
