Something hot is fanning her face despite knowing that the air-condition was blasting last night. She purred and snuggled closer to the heat and clung her leg to whoever was beside her who cleared his throat.
Yes, someone cleared his throat. Yes. His.
A man.
She suddenly woke up. The realization became immediate. Her mind quickly pieced things up together and before she could pretend that she’s still asleep, her reflex was faster to pop her eyes open and scrambled away from Daemon who laid there staring at her.
“Why are we on the floor? Did you do something to me last night?” his voice was accusing.
She fixed herself before standing up and sitting on bed looking as grumpy as ever. “Look who’s talking! You’re the one who came here in my room and hugged me like a lovesick boy last night. You won’t let go of my hand no matter what I do! And what would I do to you? I’m not like you.”
“Your room?” His brows raised. “It’s also my room.”
She cocked her brows higher. “But you never sleep here.”
“It’s still my room. It’s in my house so I own it.”
“I’m your wife so I am entitled to half of it,” she reasoned out not letting him look down on her.
“We signed a prenup.”
Her mouth fell open. She doesn’t have an answer to that.
“And so? Does that make you superior?”
“Yeah, so the next time I ask you a question, answer me properly.”
Raking up his hair, he stood up from the floor and slowly picked his jacket on the side of the bedframe just a meter away from where she’s sitting.
Devon rolled her eyes. If only he knew what he did and said last night, he wouldn’t be able to act like this. Men like Daemon hated to show their emotional side but thanks to alcohol, he revealed a side to her that she’ll definitely use against him if he’ll bully her around.
“You can’t boss me around, Daemon. I’ll answer you whenever I want and I won’t answer you if I don’t want to. You don’t even matter to me though as much as I matter to you, am I right?”
Provoked, he turned his back from the door and hitched her arm towards him. “Let me just clear one thing to you, woman. You’re eating my food. You’re living in my house rent-free.”
“Uhuh,” she shrugged nonchalantly, her eyes never leaving his gaze.
After she saw how vulnerable he can be, she can’t see him as this cruel mafia boss anymore. He’s more like a kid to her trying to mask his emotions from coming out of his fragmented personality.
“You’re alive now because of me. The next time you disrespect me in my own house, you won’t like what I’d do to you.”
“Well, I’d say release me.” Bucking her hand away from his hold, she smirked and lifted her face higher to send a message that he can never intimidate her. “I don’t want to tolerate being a prisoner in your oh so good giant house on top of having a philandering husband. You’re a cheater! I’m confused why you have to sleep here in the first place when you could have just slept with Maddy in your room.”
She bit her lips after saying that. She and her unruly mouth who couldn’t hold a thought in.
“Devon, did I say anything to you last night?” his voice was suspicious. “Was I triggered?” He grabbed her face to look for something. “Did I hit you? Said something about…”
Was he really that drunk to forget his reaction when I mentioned his father?
She smiled innocently. “Why? Did you remember something? Cat got your tongue? Nothing? So can you please get out of your own room because your tenant wants to use it now? Hmm? Can you?”
“You’re being sarcastic,” he muttered. “What did I say last night?”
“You didn’t say anything. I swear! Gosh! You’re being too overly suspicious. If you don’t want to go out, then I guess I should relieve myself of my frustration somewhere else.”
He made no reply so she took it as a leeway to walk towards the door and leave.
“Oh hi! Good morning, Maddy,” she greeted the woman who just got out of Daemon’s room that’s next to her room.
Shocked and confused at the same time, she greeted her back. “Good mor-” She stopped and looked at Daemon from behind and then back to her. That green-eyed monster called jealousy plastered all over her face.
“Ah yeah, maybe he got a little too excited last night so he came to me.” Snickering, she turned her hands palms out to point at his messy hair. “I didn’t know he could be so rough in bed with you. He’s too excited for my body. He said that was the best cum he’d ever had. Maybe you’re not that attractive to him anymore, Maddy. Too bad,” she whispered before happily running towards the staircase while Maddy began arguing with Daemon.
It’s music to her ears.
She went straight to the garage where he found Henry under the car with an open hood. He’s shirtless while wiping something underneath.
“Henry!” She called and kicked his leg that was showing from the rear side of the car. “Henry!”
“What?” He slid off from under and showed his face to her.
“I remembered something! Last night, a memory came to me!” she excitedly shrieked.
“About what?” he asked, completely coming out and grabbing his shirt to wear.
“About my mother. I didn’t see her face but I know it’s her. I want to see her, Henry. I have to talk to her. She could be the trigger that I’m looking for.”
He sighed and shook his head in impossibility. “That would be hard, Devon. You’re a Farrows, the number enemy of our group. Your father is Daemon’s enemy. He won’t let you.”
“What?! I thought he wanted me to remember? It’s for his own sake too!”
He fell silent for a moment thinking about what to do. “Daemon will be going to an auction party tomorrow. It’s the biggest by far this year and is organized by Maddy’s husband. I’m sure the Farrows will go. You can convince Daemon that you’d go with him.”
“Uhm Henry, I think that would be difficult given what I did. I just annoyed him this morning. Can’t you just drive me to our house?” she persisted.
She already saw her mother’s pictures on the internet last night but even so, nothing sparked a new memory in her brain so he deduced that he has to have a face to face interaction with her.
She needs to see her, hear her, and talk to her personally.
“Ball’s in your court now, Devon. Play it well,” Henry said and went back into repairing.
Blinking countless times, she sucked her breath and went back into the house in low spirits.
“I guess I have to say sorry.”
