“Woah.” Devon swerved and could have fallen into the floor had she not quickly reached the bed post for support. “Answer me Daemon, damn it! You and your wife, do you have a baby together?”
“We had a daughter,” he corrected her.
“Had?” she whispered.
Still shaken, she breathed hard to contemplate the information she just received. She’s confused about what to process first. The fact that he and his wife have a baby or the other startling truth that that baby is already dead.
Daemon sat there just staring at her. That annoyed her. He’s always doing that-gawking, studying her face, and then looking away as if trying to remember something. Another thing that pissed the hell out of her is his effect on her. Is it because of that fucking kiss they shared? Or his dominance over her?
She’s not the most honest woman in the world to other people but she made it to the point to be honest to herself. And this man right here affected her in ways that she can’t imagine that would happen to her.
“So, you had a baby. Is he or she dead?” she still asked despite hearing him.
“She’s missing.”
“Oh,” she mumbled to herself. So young and yet the world didn’t give her a chance. “It’s a girl. What’s her name?”
“You try to remember her.”
She gasped in incredulity. “I can’t believe this! What a douchebag! You don’t even know the name of your own daughter?”
“You named her. Why don’t you try to remember her?”
With mouth wide open, she scoffed. “You should receive the best dad title in the world, you know. You deserve it! Tell me a father who couldn’t even recall his own daughter’s name! Well, he’s none other than the great Daemon!”
“And tell me about a mother who can’t remember her own child she carried for almost a year!” Daemon yelled and rose and pointed a finger at her, his face contorted in controlled anger. “Tell me a mother who forgot about her own child because she prioritized her own safety more than the baby that she swore she would protect! It’s you, Devon!”
“I’m not Devon! I’m not her!” She fought back.
“Just because you have amnesia doesn’t mean you are not her. It doesn’t get rid of your selfishness.”
“Why are you lumping your irresponsibility at me? I. AM. NOT. YOUR. WIFE! End of discussion. I am going home now!”
Running towards the door, she bolted out in a towel and bathrobe. She doesn’t care about what people are going to say if they see her. It’s better to be a laughingstock than to cater to the whims of that psycho man.
She swallowed the nails in her throat while her hands were both holding the towel to keep her upper naked body covered. Her hair is wet and she doesn’t have a bra beneath the short robe. She’s running barefoot desperate to get out of this place.
Suddenly, before she could reach the gate, a warning shot filled the entire house.
“What the!” she screamed and fell into the ground.
Turning to her back, she was horrified to see Daemon holding the gun over his head, smoke still coming out from it.
“Daemon!” Henry came from the inside of the house to stop the boss but even he can’t do anything in this state of Daemon. His eyes were blank as he slowly lowered down the gun to aim at her who’s trembling in fear.
“Daemon!” Henry came in the middle and used his body as a shield. “Man, what are you doing? That’s Devon! She’s your wife!”
“But she told me she isn’t. What’s good to keep her living?”
“Man, you’ve searched for her for years. You kept on looking for her when everyone already gave up and accepted her death! Don’t lose it, Daemon.”
He closed his eyes to gather himself together and then threw the gun and approached Devon and scooped her in his arms.
“Don’t touch me! I said don’t touch me.” She squirmed, wriggled, and kicked her feet in the air just to make him put her down but again and again, it is useless in the face of a big muscular guy like him.
“You!” She slapped his cheek when they reached the room. “You wanted to kill me! You are sick! You’re one fuckin sick!”
“You made me this way, Devon,” he snarled and snatched her arm and pinned her to the wall. “Since the moment you came into my life, you made it a living hell for me! I married you to save you! I saved you from your own family who abused you! We had an agreement but you betrayed me! You said you love me but look what you have done! I wanted two sons! I don’t want you to be their biological mother because I know that you wanted to live a life away from this nasty world I know. I don’t want to make you attached to me. You manipulated me! You gave birth to our daughter. Her name is Emily. Just when I decided to make it alright, you betrayed me and disappeared! Now tell me who’s sicker between us?”
Shaking her head, she put her hand on his shoulder in hopes that he would stop shuddering. She didn’t realize that she’s already crying. His pain is so deep and raw that she can’t help but weep with him too.
“I don’t know, Daemon. I really have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“Of course you don’t.” His voice is thick and dark. “You left me to suffer the consequences! You have no memories? Good for you! I wish I could also erase mine because you are in it! I wish I could totally forget about you Devon just like how you casually forgot us.”
Stepping back, he put his hands into his pockets and took a long breath.
“I didn’t stop searching for you not because I still want you to be my wife but because of the information I got.” He looked at her straight in the eyes, the stare piercing she had to blink and looked down. “I want my daughter back and you will remember where you hid her.”
