Devon stayed awake the whole night. She barely had fallen asleep. Alcohol kept her company for the whole time while Maddy and Daemon stayed in the goddamn room doing what they had done just hours ago.
“You’re a jerk, Daemon. You’re a big jerk! How could you do this to me? How could you tear my heart like this? How could I fall for someone like you?”
She remembered how for the most part, he is warm and nice to her. He did save her twice from her own family only to break her heart like this.
Tipsy, she stood up in wobbling legs and sneak out of the room holding the bottle of liquor in her hand. Bitterly, she found herself in front of their room. Her tears fell the instant she raised her hand to knock.
It’s unfair. It’s really unfair! They’re all happy inside while she’s here, alone, and licking her own wounds! She should give them a part! Heck, Daemon did not follow their agreement! He said she needed to give her a son! Two sons! She’s ready but he is screwing another woman inside after taking her virginity!
She clenched her fist and readied herself to rattle the door. She didn’t care if she will break it!
“If I were you, I won’t do it,” said a voice from behind.
She snapped right at the intruder and smiled sadly. “Henry…”
He snatched the bottle from her hand and pulled her back to the entrance to her room. Devon did not fight. She just let him be because aside from the fact that she has no energy to pull herself from him, it’s also slowly sinking to her that she would only be making a fool of herself.
What would she do if they open the door? They will only see her helplessness. She will only give them a reason to mock and embarrass her even further.
“Don’t be silly. Don’t be stupid. Sleep now, lady.”
She smiled and let her body feel the coldness of the wall as she leaned on it.
She reckoned she could tease him. “Sleep? You’re telling me to sleep now? Are you worried about me now, Henry? Hmm?”
He paused and looked down at her. “You’re drunk. Fix yourself and don’t cause any scene. Daemon doesn’t want to be disturbed.”
Her smile disappeared instantly the second she heard his name. “Ah, Daemon will be disturbed and he does not want that especially when he’s too busy making Maddy moan.” She waved her hand on the air. “Yeah, got it. Got it…” Her voice trailed off. “But that’s exactly I want now! I want them to be disturbed!”
She ran back to the hallway and began shouting. ” Hey Daemon! Maddy! It’s me, Devon! Let me join in the fun! Guys! I’m right here! Let me in! Op-”
Henry caught her by the waist and before she realized it, she is back in the room in front of the closed door staring up at the angry Henry but she is not even fazed. She is annoyed. She wanted to let her pain out.
“Why are you killing the fun, Henry? Do you also want to join them?” She held both of his hands. “Come on. We’ll let them know. The more, the merrier.”
She pulled him but she wasn’t able to even make him take one step.
“Why are you doing this? You are being pathetic, Devon. Don’t forget that you are not really his wife. He bought your freedom the moment you made a deal with him. He can do as he pleases. He can always sever the contract and give you back to your own family who mistreated you. Be glad of it. Be contented with it. He will not let you distract him with his plans.”
Devon let go of Henry’s hands and whispered. “Is that reason enough for me not to get hurt? No matter how I see it, I am still his wife! How can he fuck someone knowing that I am just a few meters from him? I am literally a few steps from him, Henry!” She almost choked in her own tears but she continued. The spirit of alcohol is now waning making her feel twice the pain she felt earlier. “I am just a woman! I am a human being who can also feel pain. Why is he so insensitive?! Why does he have to insult me like this?!”
He grabbed her shoulders and shook them gently. “Nothing good will come out from loving Daemon.”
Her mouth opened to say something against his presumption but he’s too quick to shut it.
“Don’t even deny it. It’s written all over your face. You love him but he will never love you. Daemon is someone you cannot handle. You are too naïve, too innocent, too pure, too delusional to be his one true wife.” He sighed hard. “Just give him what he wanted until he’ll let you go. It’s the best way for you to survive here.”
She fell silent. “Tell me, Henry. Does Daemon intend to abandon me from the very start? Did he just play with the only daughter of her own sworn enemy? D-Did all of the good things he showed me just a part of his elaborate play?”
She wiped her face and stared determinedly at his deep eyes. “Tell me, Henry. Please.”
But the man did not even blink. “Daemon did not show you any good thing you’re talking about, Devon. He never did. It’s just your interpretation. No one can own Daemon. No one can really understand what’s going on inside his head so please stop acting that you already figured him out. Now, rest. It’s almost morning.”
He went out the room as quickly as he came in. Little by little, like a candle on the verge of dying, she sank to the floor with the same rejected feeling. She laughed hysterically, snot and tears mixing on her lap.
“I will never forget this pain, Daemon. I won’t. Never. As long as I’m alive, I will forever carry this pain. I will always remember this day, the day that you broke me beyond repairable.”
She weakly dragged her feet back into the bed and stared at the phone on the bedside table. Before she knew it, she is dialing the number of the man which she should have just asked help in the first place. She thought Daemon is the lesser evil but she learned now that she committed a big mistake.
“Hello,” a hoarse voice answered.
She swallowed her hesitation.
“I need to meet someone. I need to meet him.”
Daemon is not just the only man she can turn to. He is just one of the choices. There are actually many of them out there and she just called one.
“A Farrows! A Farrows is on the line!”
“A Farrows? Tell me, is it her?”
Finally, his voice greeted her on the line.
“Farrows,” he snarled.
She gulped. “I am offering you a deal, Reiven.”
The morning came but not once was she able to get a sleep. She has been thinking so much and hurting too much so she went back to the balcony only to see Daemon sending off Maddy in his own car.
Their eyes met. She stared back and didn’t budge. She won’t let him see her suffer anymore. A soft glow in his eyes radiated but that’s when she turned her back to go back to her room.
“It’s too late, Daemon. I’ve already made a deal with the other devil.”
