“We graduate in two weeks, Maya!”
Silence.
I looked behind me and saw Maya on the phone furiously texting someone and smiling like a fool. I knew she was dating someone but she kept saying she wasn’t ready to reveal this person’s secret identity just yet.
“Maya, for the umpteenth time, who is this person you’re seeing.”
We were currently in my house… well, my mother’s house that became my house and I have been living here by myself for the past six months. Henry and Ashley were so angry when they found out that I now had the deeds to all of my mother’s wealth and her expensive jewelry. I also let them know I knew I had relatives on my mother’s side, they were shocked considering what they told me was that all of my mom’s relatives were either dead or don’t exist.
“I’ll tell you soon, I promise.”
I knew she wouldn’t but I decided not to push it.
“Fine. What are we wearing to grad? And how are we celebrating?”
“I think we should hit the club together and then take a trip… I’m thinking Hawaii or Paris.”
“That’s amazing. I think Hawaii would be so much better. Get some of that amazing sun girl”
We hit the mall and bought our outfits for the club and graduation, and we also began to process our trip to Hawaii. All the while Maya was either texting or calling her boyfriend, this has been going on for a couple of months, and it’s starting to piss me off.
“… and as we go into the real world, let’s kick butt!!!”
We all began to clap as Astrid FINALLY finished her speech, Maya’s head rested on my shoulder as she slept. I woke her up letting her know that the torture was finally over.
Who the fuck had the crazy idea that Astrid should do the speech?
“Is she done yet?”
“Yeah.”
We fought through the rest of the graduation festivities, the only highlight of my evening was when I and Maya got handed our diplomas.
We both went to take pictures with Mrs. Santiago and Matteo, my new family.
“Congratulations, my darlings. I’m so proud of you.”
“Thanks a lot, Mom.”
We took a lot of pictures and we were laughing and having so much fun until someone thought it a good idea to rain on our parade. Guess who?
Timmy.
What was he even doing here?
He walked straight to our group and I could see Maya smiling this weird dreamy smile.
“You don’t want to have anything to do with that dork. Please stay away from him.”
“You don’t know that everyone is not as bad as they seem, Amanda.”
Okay, what?
“Trust me, he’s as bad as he seems and worse.”
“You don’t like his mother doesn’t mean you have to hate him too.”
Maya was been a little too defensive of Timmy, I was about to tell her just that when the little piece of shit got to us.
“Hello Amanda, congratulations on your graduation. You too Maya.”
I made it my sole duty in life at that moment to ignore him but when I heard him mention Maya, my interest piqued. How did he even know her name because I never took Maya home much less introduced her to any of them?
With one last look at Maya, he turned on his heel and left. Maya had some answering to do but not today, today was going to be a very happy day.
We took the party back to the house and danced away our time and our sorrows along with it.
All things considered, it has been a good year for me.
Finally, we would be leaving for Hawaii tomorrow morning. The plan was for me to get both our plane tickets and give Maya hers on our way to the airport.
I looked at the clock, it read 7:15 pm, Maya should be awake by now. Mrs. Santiago usually retires as soon as dinner is finished which is about 6:45 pm.
I stood up from my bed and picked up my phone, I wanted to tell Maya that I was coming over but my call went straight to voicemail. I picked up my car keys and the tickets and made my way to Maya’s house.
The door was open so I let myself in, I made my way upstairs to Maya’s room. I was hearing moaning from her room and I honestly thought she was in pain until I opened the door and found Tim on her.
“Maya!!!”
They both separated from each other so fast and struggled to cover themselves up.
“Amanda, what are you doing here?”
“What am I doing here? What are you doing with this douchebag?”
“He’s not a douchebag, okay? He’s my boyfriend!”
“How could you do this to me?! Of all the boys in Cali you just had to date the one who killed my mother!”
Maya sprung from the bed and faced me squarely.
“He didn’t kill your pathetic mother, everything is not about you. Your mother should have let Henry go to be with the woman he truly loved!!!”
My mouth hung open as the tears ran down my cheeks, I wasn’t even trying to hide them. How could she say something like that to me?
I looked at Tim and he looked away.
“Your mother would be so proud of you Tim, you turned out to be a destroyer just like her.”
I turned on my heel to leave only then realizing that we have an audience.
“Hello Mrs. Santiago, Matteo.”
I continued on my way downstairs, I got into my car and drove away, letting the tears fall.
I could swear with my life that he did this on purpose, killing my mother wasn’t enough. They just had to take away the ones I loved like my family.
I got home and after locking my doors and dropping my keys on the table, I collapsed on the sofa and wallowed in my misery. I let Maya in and she does this, I’m sure Tim filled her head with all those crap.
No, this isn’t who I am. I’m not a cry baby. I was born tough and I don’t let my emotions get the better of me. She wants to remain with Tim, well, she can go right ahead. Fuck them both!!!
I ran up to my room and changed into a red leather ensemble. It was a short red skirt that stopped a little bit above mid-thigh and a red leather top that showed a generous amount of cleavage and clung to my boobs like a second skin. I put on some red lipstick and some eyeliner and I let my dark curly hair loose to fall down my back. I completed my look with a pair of black pointed heels.
I opened my jewelry box and took out my mom’s diamond pendant. I looked at myself in the mirror and I looked good enough to eat. I picked up my car keys, my phone, and my purse. It was time to party.
Tim and Maya can suck my dick!!!
