Chapter 883 Let’s Talk

Book:Contractual Marriage Published:2024-5-1

Although Phoebe asked Stanford to leave Roan alone, and she could deal with her father, Stanford still went to find Roan alone in the evening.
He wanted to be with Phoebe, so he must take responsibility.
When Roan saw him, his face darkened, looking evidently unfriendly.
Stanford kept calm and said politely, “Mr. Jenkins, if you have time, let’s talk, shall we?
Roan sat on the sofa and didn’t stand up.
He said coldly, “I don’t have anything to talk to you about.”
Stanford was rarely treated so unfriendly. However, Roan was Phoebe’s father, so he was full of patience.
Stanford said calmly, “We need to talk about Phoebe.”
He was pretty polite but aggressive.
Roan’s face darkened. He kept silent.
Stanford continued, “No matter why you don’t want me to be with Phoebe, she and I have decided to be together determinedly.
“I will be with her, marry her, and be responsible for the rest of her life.
“You are her father. She also needs your approval and blessing. No matter what we need to do, what we must pay, and how long it will take, I must obtain your agreement.”
He was quite determined.
Roan looked at him in surprise.
He didn’t get along with Stanford for a long time, but he knew Stanford more or less. Stanford was always aloof and not talkative.
Whenever Stanford did something, he was used to being the one giving orders. No one could disagree with him if he had made up his mind.
This was the first time that Roan had heard Stanford talk so much.
That was why he was pretty surprised.
Roan said in a gruff voice, “Mr. Fraser, you are a superior man. Phoebe is just a small-town girl, and she wasn’t sophisticated or mature enough. She doesn’t deserve you from all aspects.”
Stanford frowned slightly. “Those superficial things are not essential at all.”
He never took those things seriously.
Roan was surprised by how blunt Stanford was.
In his circle, he knew young men from affluent families cared more about money and status because they were wealthy.
Besides, Stanford was from a higher class. Roan had thought that he would value those things more.
Much to his surprise, what worried Roan the most was worthless in Stanford’s opinion.
Stanford didn’t care about them at all.
Roan was shocked.
He had to admit that he started to take a liking to this lad.
However, he was still worried.
Looking into Stanford’s eyes, Roan asked, “Do you love Phoebe?”
Stanford, who answered his questions without any hesitation just now, was silent.
He was still working hard towards that goal.
He muttered softly, “I will love her. She’ll be my only beloved woman in the future.”
His answer stunned Roan again, who obviously understood the implication of Stanford’s words.
Roan raised his voice subconsciously, “You haven’t fallen in love with Phoebe, is that correct?”
Stanford pressed his lips and nodded honestly.
He thought that they two were trying to fall in love with each other at this stage.
Roan was more surprised. “Why do you want to be with her, then?”
They didn’t even start dating until three days ago.
Although Roan didn’t know Stanford very well, he believed that Stanford wasn’t someone who would be with a woman so randomly.
Stanford wouldn’t come to talk to the father of a random woman if he didn’t love her.
However, Stanford had done so but told him that he wasn’t in love with Phoebe yet.
Roan was confused.
Stanford’s eyes darkened a bit. He looked pretty embarrassed.
He shouldn’t have told Phoebe’s father about this matter.
However, he couldn’t hide it from Roan.
Hence, he explained frankly, “Not long ago, for some reason, I had sex with Phoebe. Since she’s willing to be with me, I must be responsible for her.”
After a pause, he added, “I’m willing to marry her, and I’ll try my best to love her and give her a devoted and perfect marriage.”
His words were like an oath.
It was quite pleasant to the ear.
Roan widened his eyes in disbelief.
He couldn’t believe what he had heard.
Hence, Stanford wanted to marry his daughter because they accidentally had a one-night-stand.
He wanted to marry her because he wanted to be responsible.
Roan’s temples were throbbing. Actually, the first thing that came to his mind wasn’t that his daughter had been bullied.
Instead, he wondered if Phoebe had done it on purpose.
He guessed that Phoebe set Stanford up and had sex with him. Then she asked him to be responsible.
Roan believed what he had guessed.
Suddenly, he thought Stanford was a silly boy, as he was willing to be responsible to Phoebe by sacrificing his whole life.
Suddenly, Roan changed his impression of Stanford. He looked at Stanford in compassion.
Roan said, “Fetch me that bottle of wine. Let’s have a drink.”
Stanford was confused.
They were talking just now, but suddenly, Roan wanted to drink with him?
Stanford reminded Roan, “Mr. Jenkins, drinking is not good for your health.”
“Don’t you want to talk to me? Let’s drink while talking.”
Stanford was speechless. They had talked so much earlier. It turned out that it wasn’t a conversation yet, was it?
His lips twitched a bit. Looking at his future father-in-law, Stanford had to admit that he was Phoebe’s biological father. Both of their minds were changing too fast for him to follow.
Soon, there were a few bottles of red wine and two goblets on the table.
Roan gulped down one glass after another. Like a friend, he kept asking Stanford to drink as well.
As they were drinking, Roan asked casually, “How did you get to know Phoebe?”
Stanford took a sip of the wine and answered, “Because of Flory. I do appreciate Phoebe for taking care of Flory for so many years.”
“What’s your first impression on Phoebe?” asked Roan again.
Stanford clinked his glass with Roan’s, gulped down the wine, and answered slowly, “No impression.”
Roan was speechless.
Stanford was probably the first man who had no impression on his girlfriend when they first met.
Roan also realized that Stanford didn’t fall in love with his daughter at first sight.
“Okay. Go on.”
Roan poured another glass of wine for Stanford, never leaving his glass empty.
Stanford didn’t refuse. He gulped down one glass after another.
Roan kept asking him questions.
“When did you have a memorable impression on Phoebe for the first time?”
“How do you like Phoebe now?”
“Do you think you’ll love her?”
Each question was about Phoebe. Roan asked while drinking as if he was chitchatting with Stanford.
However, those words were full of his care for Phoebe.
In fact, Stanford didn’t want to talk too much with others, but to get approval from his future father-in-law, he answered each question carefully in detail.
