“Kat, you need to get up,” Mateo urges. Yet I can’t see him, when I feel fur brush against me before hearing more vicious fighting. My ears ring, making everything muffled, and I feel disorientated.
“Ezra?” I murmur, my voice barely audible to my own ears.
“Currently fighting three Alphas. I can’t touch you, Kat. I need you to get up!” Mateo pleads, but I feel myself fading. I hear shifting, yet I am too weak to move.
“Fuck!” I hear someone’s voice. It sounds familiar before hands grab me and whoever has me, starts to run.
I groan trying to see who it is when they are tackled and my body goes flying. I hit the ground with a hard thud. The sounds of the fighting never stops. Ezra is taking on three Alphas? I hope he’ll be okay.
“Twenty meters Kat, you just need to get twenty meters, you have to get up,” Mateo says before grunting.
“Come on get up,” Kora orders, forcing me on my hands and knees, my claws slip out, when a surge of adrenaline hits me, yet I feel it is Ezra’s not mine, but nonetheless it gets me moving, running for the pack house.
I make it, safety is inches away. I fly up the steps and grab the door handle, ready to rip it open when claws sink into my ankle. I cry out and shake my leg, twisting in place to see Mateo tackle the wolf.
“Side drawer Kat, get the remote,” he says, slamming the wolf on the ground, he wasn’t even shifted, but I can see the wolves running at the house and could feel Maddox is injured but still fighting. I rush inside, slamming into the hall stand, ripping the drawers out, and find the remote. I start hitting buttons, wondering what it’s for, when I suddenly hear safety shutters rolling down the windows.
I let out a breath of relief as the heavy metal covers the windows and slowly rolls down. The glass door in the kitchen shatters and I hobble in that direction, my ankle still tender from the attack.
“Mateo!” I scream.
“Kat, I can’t get locked in there with you,” he warns just as a sandy-colored wolf growls from up the hallway next to the stairs. It snarls and steps forward, hunting me, and I pick up the drawer.
“Fuck, fuck, fuck,” Mateo yells, sliding under the shutter of the front door.
“Kat room!” Mateo yells, just as the wolf lunges at me. I duck sideways, throwing the draw at it. It hits the wolf in the face, and the rest of the roller shutters lock into place. Racing up the stairs, I hear dull metal thuds as wolves hit the shutters trying to break in, all while praying Mateo can deal with the other wolf. A loud whimper fills the air before a vicious snap. I gulp and glance down. Mateo is standing over it, the wolf is limp on the ground, and I know it is dead.
“Lock your door,” Mateo commands, his voice deeper than usual. Looking up at me, they aren’t Mateo’s eyes anymore, but Ares, his wolf. My heart skips a beat and I run for my door, slamming it shut and locking it.
Mateo
Ares is struggling with not attacking, her scent is getting into our head. Heat has literally caused wolves to go insane, taking away their ability to even sense their own family. All it takes is the scent of a heat-ridden she-wolf and all reason is gone. There is no command that will stop a heat-crazed wolf, and now I am locked in a house with her while her mate was locked out fighting off three Alphas and half of our patrols.
If I hadn’t lived with her and become accustomed to her normal scent. I would be alongside them wanting to mate her at any cost. Running into the kitchen while I still have some wits about me, I grab the duct tape before running to my room.
I close the door, locking it, before jamming shirts under the gap below the door and duct taping it in place before using the tape to cover the sides and top, anything to stop her scent from getting in the room.
“Is she home?” Ezra rushes through the link.
“Yes, but we have an issue, I am stuck in the house with her.” I turn my link outward, focusing on the pack. “All mated wolves get to the pack house and hold your brothers back,” I boom through the link, their voices flit through my head as they rush to help. I wonder how many will be killed, we didn’t have time to alert them to stay away. Her heat came out of nowhere.
Not even Ezra can command a crazed wolf once locked onto a scent.
“She is injured, I couldn’t check her, but she is bleeding badly, you need to get here.” I mind link. The howls outside are deafening. And I can hear her in pain down the hall, yet I can do nothing to comfort her, all I can do is stare at the door.
She is still in the first phase, if Ezra doesn’t get in the house, phase two won’t be good, especially with me trapped in the house with her. Phase two is uncontrollable lust, she will want to mate, be forced to, in order to stop her own agony. So not only will Ezra be fighting to get in, he will also be fighting her from trying to get out.
“Keep my link to you open, don’t close it. You can do this, Mateo. You can fight it, if not for me, you can for Kat,” Ezra links, before I hear Maddox get the air knocked out of him.
“What’s going on?” I ask, needing the distraction.
“Harley ran, he has found his mate but hasn’t marked her, but was able to leave. Nicolas is unconscious but won’t be for long, Andrei, Maddox is currently dealing with him,” Ezra grunts. “How many patrollers were there outside?” He asks.
“Around twenty, maybe more now, it’s awfully loud out there,” I report, clutching my hair as her scent gets stronger, not even the duct tape is helping.
Ares is on edge and my body trembles.
“Mathias and Jasmine are on their way with her mother and tranquilizers to put them down, but we may not have enough,” Ezra cautions, but I am too consumed with the war inside me to answer.
I can smell her blood from her injuries, and she has fallen silent.
