“You shouldn’t be the one to apologize.” Robert replied, as he touched her chin gently so she would look at him. “I was selfish, and I guess I was a bit too focused on what I’d benefit from your marriage to Marcus. I’ll admit that I was really angry at first when you left, but after a while I thought about it, especially after David Stewart confirmed that you were alright, then I realized that I pushed you away. For that I’m sorry… ”
“Oh, dad”
“I see how… different you are now” Robert continued. “You look more confident in yourself and you’re so happy… am I wrong?”
Bonnie blushed as she shook her head. Was it really that obvious? But he was right. She was happier than she’d ever been in a long time. “No you’re not” she replied finally.
There was a pause, before Robert added. “And am I wrong to assume that David Stewart has something to do with that happiness?”
Bonnie averted her eyes. She knew the topic of David would come up sometime. His presence alone was going to bring it up anyway as he wasn’t her Bodyguard anymore and yet he’d visited home with her.
“We are a couple,” she said finally. “We made things official a week ago. A lot has happened between us and we decided to try for real this time. I hope it’s okay… I know he’s not the kind of guy you’d choose for me but I love him and I’d really like it if you all get along”
“I respect him” Robert Rimmer replied. “And I admire his strength and dedication to his job. When I hired him, I had faith in him that he’d find you, and he did. He’s really good at his job, but I also hope you know how dangerous a job like his could be. I’m going to mind my business this time and I won’t get involved, but I think it’s something the both of you should talk about. All I want is for you to be safe”
Her father was right, Bonnie thought. She’d be lying to herself if she said the thought had not crossed her mind, but she had no idea how to bring it up with David. She knew how much he loved his job and he was already talking about his next mission as soon as his injury fully healed. It was going to be an issue and she knew it.
“Everything alright?” Robert asked, bringing Bonnie back to the present.
“Yes of course. David and I will talk about it. Thank you dad. I’m glad you approve”
“Yeah. I do, but I still have to have a talk with him…just so he knows how to treat my baby”
Bonnie chuckled. “I know… but please go easy on him” she said.
“I wouldn’t be too worried,” Robert replied. “Whatever it is, I’m sure a man like David Stewart will be able to handle it.”

“Your dad sure is a tough guy” David said as they retired for bed that night.
Bonnie smiled at him. “Why do you say that? You have met him before now. Haven’t you?” she asked. “In fact, the both of you once planned to bring me back here even if I didn’t want to.”
“Yeah, but then I was meeting with him in a professional setting. I was working for him so I didn’t have to worry about anything personal. Right now it’s different. Now, I’m the guy dating his daughter.”
“And?”
David saw the look of concern in her eyes and quickly went to her. “Nothing to worry about” he said. “I’m just nervous, that’s all. I think it’s normal for me to be. We talked… he wants me to be good to you and I will be.”
Bonnie cupped his cheek in her hand. “You have nothing to worry about, believe me” she replied. “I talked to him, and he seems to really like you. He respects you. If he’s giving you a hard time, he’s just his own way of protecting me. I’m sure he’ll come around” She winced a little as the headache suddenly returned. “Oh damn it. The headache is back”
David pulled her closer and kissed her forehead. “Don’t you think we should see a doctor? You’ve been having it for hours now, and I noticed that you look really tired too.”
Bonnie shook her head. “I’m fine.” she said. “I promise you it’s nothing, and having you here…. Holding me makes me feel better. Let’s just go to bed, I’m sure it’s the stress and worry about meeting my parents. It will go away after a cold shower…. Besides, we have a flight to catch tomorrow… you know Mandy and Mavis will be expecting us. I honestly can’t wait to see them.”
David’s face lit up immediately. “Yeah, same here.
Mavis is gonna be very happy when we tell her that we’re together”
“She will?”
“Yeah. She has this idea in her head that she’s supposed to play the matchmaker in my life. She’s going to be very proud of herself. Now go take that shower…. Unless you would like me to join you… I’m sure my presence in there will help a lot with that headache”
He slipped a hand inside her robe and Bonnie grinned at the naughty look in his eyes. The idea of showering together was tempting, but she moved away from him. “No,” she said. “You wait for me here and I’ll be out soon”
David nodded and Bonnie slipped into the bathroom. After she shut the door behind her, she slowly withdrew the pregnancy test she was hiding under her robe and took a deep breath. One more minute out there with him and he’d have the test. Her heart was beating fast as she thought about the possibility of her being pregnant.
She’d been suspecting that she was for a few days now. Her period was late and it never was, and although she couldn’t quite tell the difference between pregnancy symptoms and just period symptoms, she knew damn well that it had never been this intense for her.
She wondered what David would say if it was positive. Would he freak out? They had only just started their relationship and getting pregnant now seemed too soon. Would it affect their relationship negatively? Was she even ready to be a mother? Was she going to keep the baby?
There was no way she was going to find out if she kept sitting there. She had to be brave and take the test, then whatever the result was, she’d find a way.
