Bonnie had just stepped out of the shower and into the room when the door flung open and David stepped inside and shut the door behind him. She was so startled that she almost let go of the towel she had wrapped around her body.
Bonnie glared at him as she took a step back in shock. “Jeez. What the fuck is wrong with you David?” she asked, “What are you doing? You scared the hell out of me. Don’t you know how to knock?”
David said nothing, but his eyes were glued on her. She looked fucking sexy, with her hair tied up in a messy bun and her hands wrapped around her, gripping the loosely tied towel against her breasts. It only pushed them upward, making them even more pronounced and after spending hours away from her, David admitted to himself that he had missed her terribly.
“What are you doing?” Bonnie asked again and lifted an inquisitive eyebrow. “And why are you back so fast? I thought you would still be fixing the boat?”
David shook his head as if he was waking up from a trance. “Sorry about that. Didn’t mean to scare you, but we have to leave…Now” he said.
Bonnie waited for more explanation from him and got none. He just stood there staring at her as if she was just supposed to follow his orders without question. She got angry immediately. The nerve of the man! She thought. One minute he was pushing her away and making her leave with Mandy and Mavis with very little explanation, and the next he was barging back into her space, asking her to come with and seriously expecting her to just go ahead and do what he said.
“You are kidding, right?” she asked.
“Unfortunately, I’m not.” came his reply.
Do you mind telling me why?” she asked calmly, trying to put her emotions in check.
“We can talk about that later” he replied, “Just get dressed, grab your things and meet me outside”
He turned to go, almost as if he was dismissing her, but Bonnie had had enough of his attitude. “I’m not doing anything and I’m not going anywhere with you until you tell me what the fuck is going on” she said.
He stopped in his tracks and turned to glare at her, but Bonnie stood her ground, determined not to let him intimidate her. He might be hot and much bigger than her but she had to show the man that she wasn’t the kind of woman he could just boss around anytime he wanted so she glared right back at him, but when he strolled toward her she took an involuntary step backwards.
“I have to get you back home,” he said, “Preferably back to your parents…that would be safer”
Bonnie was sure that she hadn’t heard him correctly. Either that or he had definitely lost his mind. “Safer? Excuse me? Safe from what? You know, you really have to learn how to communicate with people.”
At first, Bonnie had been sad about having to leave the boat with Mavis and Mandy, unable to understand why he was putting so much distance between them, but after a while that sadness had turned into anger. She was mad at him for not seeing things the way she did. Mad at him for making decisions for her and telling her how she was supposed to feel. Mad at him for making conclusions and not even willing to try and see if they could make things work, and now trying to make more decisions for her just got on her nerves.
“I already told you that I’m not going back there. It’s okay if you don’t want to be with me, but you don’t get to decide where I go. And why are you here so early?” she added sarcastically, “Aren’t you supposed to be off somewhere fixing your boat. I thought you said it was going to take long. Do me a favor, go back and leave me alone, will you?”
Her words stung, and David knew that he deserved it, but there was no time to talk about that at the moment. It’s not safe for you here, Bonnie” he said, “I know that you are mad at me but I need you to trust me. Your dad’s place is probably the safest place for you right now”
“That is not an explanation.”
David paced the room and ran his fingers through his hair impatiently. “Damn it, Bonnie” he yelled, “For once will you just stop wanting to have things go your way and just listen! Being around me has made you a fucking target. This is one of the reasons why we can’t be together. It’s not safe for you…I am not safe for you. This guy…whoever the fuck he is…he thinks that he can get to me by hurting you…and if he does…I’m not going to be able to forgive myself. What the fuck am i even going to say to your family. How am I going to…. live with myself if you get hurt because of me?” He stopped talking and paced the room again before he stopped and leaned against the wall.
“We shouldn’t have…i shouldn’t have brought you here with me” he said softly and Bonnie hated the sound of regret in his voice. “I shouldn’t have let things go this far, Bonnie. Should never have kissed you or made love to you. We don’t belong together and all I have succeeded in doing is to put you in danger. My job can be really dangerous sometimes… I make enemies… and if they can’t get to me, then they go after the people I….”
He stopped talking that instant and swallowed. What was the point? Telling her how he felt would not make things better. Bonnie simply stood there and watched him. His words hurt her so much. The fact that he regretted something that she would always cherish for the rest of her life hurt so much that she wanted to burst into tears, but she held on. “I still don’t understand. Why didn’t you ever mention any of this when we were on the boat?” she asked.
“I dismissed it as just threats. That’s all they have been for months, but now that you are involved I can’t take chances. I need you to be safe, Bonnie”
