Dead meat

Chapter 65:
Violet’s POV
When Axel left the room, I remained on the bed with a permanent smile on my face that refused to go away.
To think that Axel had finally accepted me as his mate…
It was like having this beautiful dream but never really admitting it because you were scared it would go away and now that it was finally happening in reality, I found it too much to take.
I felt like screaming at the top of my lungs. My insides were unable to control it.
My cheeks were burning with excitement. My heart was skipping beats each time I thought about the moment we shared and I could only wish that this was ended quickly so that Axel would return to me.
I wasn’t worried about him because I knew he could handle himself. Axel was as strong as the metal itself. No one could hurt him and even if they hurt him, he could always regenerate because he was a Lycan.
The strongest of all werewolves. An essence they all feared and respected.
And now, he was mine…
Another wave of warmth flowed through my veins and tingles filled my pores. I was a mess, yet I loved every moment of it.
I was still in my dreamland when a sharp knock on the door dragged me back to reality and I sat up just as the door pushed open.
It was Sky.
She had a worried look on her that caused a spot in my heart to freeze and the dream I had just been fantasising over disappeared instantly.
“Violet, are you ready?” She blurted out and my mind immediately took me back to the conversation I had with her and Sam a few hours ago.
They were going to help my parents escape in the best way possible. A way that didn’t warrant the spill of blood, wolf or human. And most importantly, I didn’t have to kill Axel as a condition.
Apparently, there was a back door in the dungeon floors. The plan was to them there. Sam would have found a way to cooperate with the humans that work on that side, to offer them a safe passage.
It was a perfect plan and this worried me. I had learned in my life that whatever came easy, had a lot of disadvantages. Yet try as I might, I could not spot where the problem could come from.
“Violet, are you even listening to me?” Sky asked and I snapped out of my thoughts, blinking innocently at her.
“Yes, of course, I heard you. Let’s go-”
The words trailed off my mouth as a deafening howl filled the air and soon more screams followed.
I looked at Sky and she had the same shocked expression that I had on my face.
Without wasting time, I jumped off the bed and started heading to the door but Sky held back my arm.
“Where are you going, Violet? We don’t even know what’s going on. You can’t just go outside like that-”
An explosion suddenly rocked the building, the force sending both of us to the ground.
I covered my head as we took cover. I could feel my heart shaking as we waited out the vibrations with our eyes closed. I was certain that the moment I opened them, I was going to find the entire place destroyed completely.
A thousand questions played out in my head. Had Axel and his men changed their minds and decided to bring the war here?
Or did the enemy come to them and then they had no choice but to start the fight?
My legs were shaking and the ringing in my head was a constant reminder for me to take charge.
It felt like another revolution was happening and I refused to remain hidden away when the whole world was falling apart. Axel might need me. Maybe I overestimated him.
Maybe those people had even used my father’s invention on him and he had lost his powers.
“No,” I whispered and opened my eyes at once. I had to go out there and help Axel.
I got on my feet and surprisingly the room was still standing and I felt it would be the only structure standing at all.
I ignored the trembling in my legs and the ringing in my ears and headed for the door.
“Violet, where are you going?” Sky cried out and I flashed my eyes at her suddenly remembering that she was even there with me to start with.
I quickly went to her position on the floor and quickly helped her up.
“Are you okay? Are you hurt?” I asked, despite the weight of fear that started trickling through me.
She nodded her head and shook it all at once. “Yes, I am fine… I should be asking if you are…”
Her eyes were fixed on a side of my face so I raised my fingers and felt around the area, when my fingers returned there was blood on them.
I winced and quickly went to the dressing table to inspect how bad it was.
Thankfully, it was just a minor cut.
“I’ll survive Sky and you will too,” I said, returning to her. “We need to go out there. Go find Sam and bring him back here. I will go find out what’s happening.”
I could see the protest already building in her eyes but I didn’t give her a moment to express herself. I turned away and headed out before she could speak.
Outside, the corridors looked perfectly fine. A frown sat on my face as I started wondering what the explosions were.
Then I heard the sound of heavy boots running in the left direction -the one that led to the fields.
Without thinking it through, I started running as well, following the sounds of the boots.
The closer I got I started hearing the sound of metals clashing against one another followed by screams and yells.
My legs started reducing its speed and by the time I got to the last corridor that led out, I saw what was going on.
It was a bloody massacre.
Men in different uniforms fought against our soldiers and it was brutal. They were cutting through the skin with swords and claws like animals.
There was no coordination or prediction as to where they would hit next, they just kept fighting and the mansion’s defence was starting to dwindle.
I could see in the far corner that the new men were starting to trickle through our defences and they were going into the mansion.
My eyes also picked up the smoke from the distance and I saw that the slave quarters were on fire. That was where the explosion had happened.
My heart was suddenly filled with horror as I understood what this meant.
They were definitely the enemy and they were here to prove their point by killing every human.
“Fuck!” I cursed as my hands folded into fists.
I would not let them get to the slaves who were hiding in the lower sections of the mansion.
I turned right around and started running in that direction to save them but I didn’t get far. The moment I turned, I ran into a wall of muscles and it almost knocked me off my feet but they held me back.
“What the fuck are you doing out here?”
Before even raising my head to meet hers, I knew exactly who it was, Emily.
“What does it look like I am doing? I am going to save my people! Those men have started going into the mansion, it is only a matter of time before they find them!” I said in a rush.
Emily looked red with anger and another emotion I couldn’t quite place.
“Do you think you can fucking fight those men? What the fuck is wrong with you?” She hissed in a low voice.
I was surprised at her words. I looked around myself and I started wondering if I looked different because she should have known that I wouldn’t stop until my people were safe.
“Nothing is wrong with me, Emily. And you are wasting my time!” I yelled, pushing her away.
I was about to resume heading to my destination when I felt her strong arms around me once again.
“You are too fucking stubborn and you will get everyone killed if you do not stop yelling!”
She threw her eyes around and clicked her tongue before pushing my body into a room close to us.
“What the hell is wrong with you Emily??” I hissed but she slammed my body to the wall and clamped her hands over my mouth.
My heart was still racing but now it was filled with panic as Emily’s motives became strange before me.
“Shut the fuck up and listen to what is fucking happening outside,” she whispered before me and my brows furrowed.
I wanted to push her away and continue fighting but my ears picked out the sounds of boots outside.
“I heard her voice around here. We should take her alive but if she is dead meat. The boss wouldn’t mind too,” A voice said and my heart shattered.
Shit. They were here for me.
