Chapter 42
After Ashton was given the medicine, he slipped into a coma. Maya, Theo, and Eliphas checked on him from time to time, and seeing that his breath was steady they heaved light sighs of relief as he was getting better.
The color on his face which had been drained to look as white as snow was slowly returning and his cracked lips were regaining their pinkish cue. His chest rose and fell and he looked like a sleeping prince.
“Thank you so much, uncle Eliphas. This is a lifetime favor. I don’t know if we will ever repay it.” Maya said, clasping her hands close to her heart. Her gaze was filled with gratitude and dependence as she looked at Eliphas.
“Child you have already thanked me over ten thousand times. I told you that I take Ashton as my son and you as my daughter, so I could do just as much to see that he is well.” Eliphas said.
“Still, I have to thank you. I don’t know what I would have done, honestly.”
“You are very brave and very strong, more than you could ever imagine, don’t underestimate your worth.”
…
At the wind winders pack….
The alpha’s study room was filled with a thick layer of smoke and Mark had a cigarette in his hand as he looked outside the window with a complicated expression.
He was thinking about how he would sneak out of the pack without anyone noticing especially his beta when he heard hurried footsteps from outside the study room.
“Alpha!” Someone called out respectfully. Mark immediately went to open the door only to see the pack healer standing outside.
“What is it?” Mark asked with a frown. He had not called for a healer, why was she here?
The healer who had come lowered her head and bowed respectfully. She did not dare make eye contact with the alpha. She had a timid look on her face as her heart beat faster. She had just joined the pack not long ago and this was the first time she met the alpha.
“Alpha, it is our luna. She suddenly fainted in her room.” The healer said in a slow voice that almost sounded like a whisper.
“What did you just say?” Mark asked.
“The luna, she fainted in her room and now we are asking you to go and take a look.” The healer said. “Healer Sean is giving her a checkup. They asked me to come and inform you.”
“What am I supposed to do? It is not like I can cure her. Why don’t you do your job and stop wasting time? I will come and see her once she is awake?” Mark asked in an annoyed tone.
He did not want to see that woman’s face at the moment. Just thinking about the torture that Maya had gone through in his absence, he did not feel like having any contact with her at the moment. If it was before, he would have rushed to her side, but now, his heart was as still as water and his emotions were indiscernible.
The healer trembled at the alpha’s outburst and immediately left in a hurry. She did not even dare to look back. The alpha seemed to be in a bad mood because he has never been so cold.
Mark slammed the door to his study room shut. He regretted marking Lily as his luna. If he had another chance, he would not have repeated the same mistake. He would have gone at all odds to be with the woman he loved.
He had thought that marrying lily will be his biggest gain and that with her on his side, together they will conquer the world. Who would have thought that things would go south between them even when a year had not passed?
Lily did not have any leadership talent. All she knew was to apply makeup, go shopping, and sleep like twelve hours a day. She has never cared about how the pack was doing. The only thing she knew was to order everyone around like they were her slaves.
He would not have listened to his parents. ‘What good for the pack? It was all nonsense. He would have followed his heart and married the woman that he loved.’ He had tossed away the only thing that mattered to him with his bare hands, who was supposed to blame now?
It was funny though because when he was bonking Lily when Maya was still around, he always felt accomplished seeing her jealous face. He never knew that what he did was so stupid that he felt like slapping himself every time he thought about it. He had been too naïve and stupid that he hated himself now.
Not long after he closed the door, another knock came. Mark was so annoyed that he did not want to open the door. He only wanted some time alone. Was it hard for these people to understand?
“Who the heck is it now? Leave your message at the door and scram!” Mark roared.
“Alpha, this is very important.” The person standing outside the door’s mind linked with him.
Mark was shocked. Anyone who could mind linking with the alpha was at least at the beta’s level, and that was not Jay’s voice. It was Sean, the leader of the healers’ team.
“What is it?” mark asked in an annoyed voice.
The man outside went directly to the point without beating around the bush. He had noticed that his alpha was in a bad mood and he did not want to suffer his wrath.
“Congratulations alpha, the luna is pregnant.” He said in an excited voice.
Mark was shocked and it took him a whole minute to digest what he has just heard.
“What did you just say?” He asked, his voice trembling from the shock.
“Her highness is expecting. She fainted in her room all of a sudden and after a full body check-up, we have determined that she is pregnant.” The head of the pack healers said.
Mark was stupefied. Lily was pregnant? He didn’t know if he should feel excited or feel disappointed. He had not been intimate with her for a long time, he did not know that she was pregnant.
“How old is the pregnancy?” Mark asked.
“Around eight weeks.” The healer said. “She is in a critical condition right now. She is still unconscious and I was hoping the alpha could stay with her for the time being. I bet she doesn’t know that she is pregnant. If she wakes up and sees you by her side, I am pretty sure that she will be excited.” Sean said.
Mark did not say anything and stayed quiet for a long time. ‘Lily is pregnant!’ That was the only thing that was running through his mind.
“You can leave. I will check on her right away.” Mark said after a moment of silence.
The pack healers gave out a respire of relief. The alpha had been behaving abnormally lately and he had noticed that the lovebird’s relationship was a bit tense. They were not as close as they had been at the beginning of their relationship.
“Wait… why did she suddenly faint? Is she feeling, okay?” Mark asked.
“Luna’s mood seems a bit agitated. We could tell that the reason why she fainted was because of her unstable mood. As for the cause, we have no idea.”
“You may leave.”
The moment he left; Mark cursed under his breath.
“Ha ha ha pregnant? Lily, what good timing!” He said in between sobs.
He did not know if he was crying tears of joy or disappointment. But what he was sure about right now was that he was never going to look for Maya again. All his plans had been washed down the drain.
Mark sat in his bedroom and thought about a lot of things. He had been hoping for a child of his own, especially a girl so that he could call him Maya. But after learning that Maya was still alive, he did not want it anymore.
But he had to take responsibility whether he want it or not. He was an alpha and Lily was his luna. It was only natural for them to be pregnant.
“Maya I am so sorry that I have to let you down again. It seems like the moon goddess had other plans for us in this lifetime. But in my next life, I will make sure that we end up together.” Mark murmured under his breath.
Even if he managed to find her, he had no idea how he would face her. The only thing he would be able to pray to the moon goddess is that she keeps her safe and in good health. Maybe one day when fate allows, they will meet again.
