As they arrived at the villa and stepped inside, Dolores handed him the car keys. “The car is still at the hotel.”
“I’ll have Abbott bring it back,” he replied.
Simona turned her head upon hearing their voices and quickly slid off the sofa, rushing over to meet them. But instead of embracing Dolores, she ran straight into Matthew’s arms. Looking up at him with her innocent, clear eyes and a face as soft as a rice cake, she spoke, “Daddy, why did you come back so late?”
She resembled an angel.
Matthew lifted her up and spoke patiently, “Your mommy and I went out for dinner.”
Simona’s eyes sparkled with excitement. Wow! Mommy and Daddy had such a great relationship.
The two of them went on dates too.
How amazing!
“Mummy, is it true?” she asked, gripping Matthew’s collar in her tiny hands, her gaze filled with anticipation.
Matthew glanced down at her hands tightly clutching his crumpled collar. He wasn’t angry; instead, he smiled and said, “It depends on your mommy’s behavior.”
What did he mean?
Simona didn’t understand his words. She blinked her twinkling eyes and immediately asked, “What does that have to do with Mommy?”
Dolores felt slightly uneasy and embarrassed. She reached out to take Simona into her arms and said, “Let’s go. I’ll tuck you in bed.”
Simona clung tightly to Matthew’s neck, unwilling to go with Dolores.
Coral stood by the doorway. “Simona has been repeating the same question all day, asking when her daddy would come back. She refused to go to bed and kept waiting on the living room sofa.”
Matthew had clearly denied any connection to them. Coral couldn’t understand why they had become so close.
She believed that blood was thicker than water.
If these two children had nothing to do with Matthew, why were they growing so attached to him?
“Really?” Matthew playfully pinched Simona’s cheek, and her joy knew no bounds.
Blushing, she buried her face in his neck.
Coral smiled, thinking that this was what a father-daughter relationship should look like.
“It’s late. You all should get some sleep too. Samuel is already asleep in your mother’s room,” Coral said to Dolores.
Dolores nodded. “I’ll go check on him.”
“Okay.” After uttering those words, Coral returned to her own room.
Just as Dolores was about to open the door to Jessica’s room, Simona said, “I want to sleep with Daddy tonight.”
Dolores furrowed her brows.
Without waiting for her response, Matthew walked upstairs with Simona in his arms, casually telling Dolores, “We’ll be waiting for you upstairs.”
Dolores wanted to refuse, but seeing Simona in his arms, she swallowed her words.
She gently opened the door. The room was dimly lit by a bedside lamp. Jessica was still awake, cradling Samuel in her arms.
Dolores approached and checked Samuel’s injuries first. The swelling on his face had subsided, but his head wound hadn’t fully healed. She reached out and gently stroked his face.
“The injury looks much better,” Jessica said softly. “Don’t worry.”
She was concerned for Dolores.
“But you must take care of yourself too.” They couldn’t stay here indefinitely.
“I know.” Dolores had considered it. This place was definitely not suitable for a long-term stay, but Maria had been hostile toward her. Dolores didn’t know what Maria would do next, so for her children’s safety, she had no choice but to stay for now.
“Once things calm down a bit, we’ll either go back or find a new place.”
“As long as you understand the seriousness of the situation. I’ve noticed that Simona has become overly attached to Matthew. If this continues…”
Dolores was worried too. She reached out and held Jessica’s hand. “Mom, I’m worried too, but it’s impossible to separate Simona from Matthew right now.”
At this moment, Simona’s attention was completely focused on Matthew, and taking her away from him seemed impossible.
“I understand.” Jessica understood this better than Dolores. Simona had been talking nonstop about her daddy all day long.
She let out a deep sigh.
“It’s late. Go get some rest.”
“Yeah.” Dolores glanced at Samuel once more.
“Don’t worry, I’ll stay here.”
Dolores gently stroked Samuel’s hair before leaving the room. The living room was quiet, and the wall clock showed that it was already midnight. She took a shower and changed into her pajamas before heading upstairs.
Matthew had also showered and was dressed in casual beige-colored clothes. Simona was curled up in his arms, her little hands resting on his chest.
It had become Simona’s habit.
Dolores approached them. “I’ll let her hold onto me while she sleeps.”
“Okay, if you can manage to move her.” Matthew had been rendered speechless for a long time due to Simona’s peculiar habit. She insisted on placing her hands on his chest; otherwise, she couldn’t fall asleep.
She would wake up as soon as he tried to move her.
Dolores gently tried to shift her hand, but Simona immediately woke up. “Mommy, what are you doing?”
“Hug me and go to sleep.”
“I want to sleep while hugging Daddy, but…” Dolores furrowed her brow, confused. “But what?”
Simona pouted, looking slightly aggrieved. “Why are Daddy’s chest so flat and hard? They’re not like Mommy’s chest.”
Both Matthew and Dolores were taken aback. How were they going to explain this?
“Simona, why don’t you come sleep with me instead?” Dolores tried to coax her, wanting to separate her from Matthew. After all, he wasn’t her father, and it wouldn’t be appropriate for them to continue this closeness. The inevitable separation would be painful for both of them.
Simona was torn inside. She wanted to sleep with Dolores, but she was afraid that her Daddy would disappear. Her little face twisted in thought. While she knew her Mommy would never leave her, she worried that her Daddy might no longer want to be with her. She had to hold him close.
“I want Daddy to hug me to sleep,” Simona snuggled further into Matthew’s arms and kept her hand on his chest. Muttering to herself, she said, “Mommy’s is softer.”
Matthew didn’t quite hear her and asked, “What did you say?”
“I said Mommy’s chest is soft. She also has milk. When I was a baby, I used to eat from her chest.”
Dolores’s face turned deep red, embarrassment creeping from her face down to her neck. What was Simona even saying? People often said that children’s words carry no harm, but they forgot that it depends on who is in front of them.
The corners of Matthew’s eyes crinkled with a smile, and a playful glint appeared in his fiery gaze as he looked directly at Dolores’s chest. He said, “Really?”
Simona nodded innocently. “Of course.”
His smile widened, and his eyes twinkled with impish charm as the light reflected in them. “I can’t believe you. I’ve never touched it, and I can’t tell just by looking.”
“Matthew!” Dolores couldn’t help but feel exasperated. Could he be more shameless? He couldn’t even restrain himself in front of a child.
“You’re going too far!” Dolores exclaimed in embarrassment, desperately wishing for the ground to open up and swallow her whole.
Matthew spread his hands in a nonchalant gesture, freeing himself from any responsibility. “Your daughter said it!”
Simona shrank back in fear. She could clearly see the anger on Dolores’s face. She had never seen her Mommy so furious. Her eyes turned red, and tears began to flow.
Quickly, Dolores tried to calm her down. “Simona, don’t be scared. Mommy isn’t angry with you.”
Simona continued to sob softly.
Dolores hugged her tightly and gently patted her back. “Simona!”
She kissed her hair, her forehead, and her cheeks, repeating, “Simona, baby, Mommy didn’t mean it. I wasn’t shouting at you. Did I scare you?”
Simona nodded, tears still streaming down her face.
Dolores continued to comfort her. “Don’t be afraid, don’t be afraid. Mommy won’t yell at you.”
Simona wiped her tears and looked at Dolores. “I’m sleepy.”
“You can hug me and sleep.”
“Can we sleep here with Daddy?”
Dolores hesitated, unsure of how to respond. Seeing Dolores’s hesitation, Simona’s eyes welled up with tears once again, ready to cry.
“Okay,” Dolores finally agreed. She lay down on the bed and opened her arms, inviting Simona to crawl in. With Dolores being slim and Simona being small, they didn’t take up much space on the bed. There was still plenty of room for Matthew.
He lay down beside them, silently staring at the ceiling.
“Simona, don’t you want Daddy anymore?” Dolores asked, her voice filled with concern.
