Chapter 377: Not a Dream

Book:The Selfish CEO Published:2024-6-2

The familiar scent, and the heat rushing over, made Zoey startle. Looking up, she saw that he wasn’t wearing much, and subconsciously wanted to take the trench coat off and return it to him. However, he was overbearingly pressed the movement, “Be a good boy and cover up, now there is a slight sandstorm, don’t let the sand get into your eyes.”
With a flutter of heartstrings, Zoey only felt that the anger in her heart just now seemed to have vanished all of a sudden. Along with that, that cold hard heart, seems to have collapsed one side, become especially soft. The windbreaker on her body, wrapped around her and the child, also blocked the dry wind outside, heart, welled up a kind of unspeakable warmth, the tip of the nose slightly astringent.
Moving his lips, he wanted to say something, but he had already turned around and took Nini from Feng’s arms. He held Nini firmly, as if he was afraid that the sand and dust would hurt her, his large palm always protecting the child’s delicate little face.
Jerry Xiao walked over to Zoey and took her luggage again. This time, Zoey didn’t refuse, but just stared at his back as he walked forward. At the bottom of her heart, a thin vine grew and wrapped itself around her heart.
“Well? Uncle is handsome, isn’t he?” KK raised an eyebrow at her.
Zoey drew back and looked at the base, “In a moment Zoey will take you to the villa. You can’t stay here.”
She’s worried that Nini’s body won’t make it.
Zoey thought that Jing Si was thanking her for her ‘matchmaking’, but she felt a little bad about it.

The base was a tough environment, and the wind blew over, carrying grit and making it hard to get dry and hard on the eyes. The two kids couldn’t stand it any longer and rubbed their eyes. Luckily, the first day’s work wasn’t too much, but it was just a patrol. Zoey handed over the responsible work to Jing Si, and then drove alone with the children towards the villa.
“Zoey , won’t Uncle stay in the villa with us?”
Zoey grips the steering wheel and looks ahead at the sea of sand, brooding slightly. Indeed, his body did not seem to be fully healed. Exhaustion had just surfaced on his face, and she wondered whether he had just recovered from a serious illness, or whether his old illness had simply never healed.
She accompanied the child to live in the villa. The villa, even though it was only a place where the godmother occasionally came to stay for a while, was fully stocked. From food to drinks, the refrigerator was stuffed to the brim.
She had made a simple dinner for the children, and had taken them to a bath, and perhaps because of the exhaustion of the day, the children were soon asleep.
Zoey stood at the window, staring blankly at the small dunes in front of the darkness, and after one dune after another, there was the base. After one dune after another, there was the base, and Zoey’s cell phone rang just as the figure crossed her mind, and when she saw the number displayed on the screen, she froze, thinking she was hallucinating about him. But it wasn’t – her cell phone had been ringing constantly while she was lost in thought.
Taking a deep breath and smoothing out her emotions, she spoke calmly, serenely, “Hey!”
“Secretary Baker!” It wasn’t Jerry Xiao, but Feng. But compared to her calmness, he was in a rare panic.
Zoey’s chest tightened suddenly, “Is something wrong?”
“The president is having a seizure and has been calling for you, so I wondered … if I could trouble you for a moment?”
“A flare-up?” Zoey said, her voice rising and trembling. As she asked, she fished for the car keys off to the side and gripped them in her hand, too panicked to even pull on her blouse before rushing out the door, “Hasn’t he been treated yet? How come he’s still having seizures by now?”
“Medicine is not advanced enough to treat it now. The president’s condition is worse today than it was eight months ago.”
Zoey had already gotten into the car, gripping the steering wheel with one hand and holding her cell phone with the other. When she heard Afon s words, even her lips were a little white, “Will … that life still be in danger?”
Feng paused there for a short moment, but Zoey felt her heart clench so tightly in those few seconds that she couldn’t catch her breath.
“Anytime.” Afon’s sorrowful reply made her form tremble, only to feel the tightly strung string at the bottom of her heart break with a ‘bang-‘.
For a long, long time, she said nothing but held the phone and breathed heavily. Afon also heard the hurt in those breaths, so he gently called out, “Secretary Baker?”
“I’ll be right there. Soon!”
Hanging up the phone, only to feel the face slightly cold. Only when I touched it with my hand did I realize that my face was actually full of cold tears.
It’s really funny. How could she shed so many tears in such a dry environment? And, didn’t she say that she would always be a stranger to that person? Now, what are these tears for?
The eyes were a blur long ago. Luckily, there were no people traveling through the desert. Her car, over the sea of sand, was far enough away to see the light burning from the base. After she quickly stopped the car, she flew in. At the entrance of the base, Ah Feng was already waiting there. Seeing him, Zoey couldn’t hold back her tears.
“How is he? Where is the man?”
“Follow me.” Feng led her to the room assigned to the base. The conditions here were especially rudimentary, with only a single bed, not to mention a bath.
When Zoey entered the room, she saw Jerry Xiao, clothed and dazed, on a single bed. He clenched his teeth, as if he did not want to make the noise of his pain next door to his colleagues, his face was so pale that it was scary.
She’d seen him suffer countless times, but Zoey was still struck by the sight. Her feet went a little weak, and her heart trembled.
She choked, “Did you take your medicine? Now, what should I do so that his life is not in danger? Ah Feng, tell me …”
She looked blankly and helplessly at Afon, who had a sullen expression, “There’s nothing I can do now. The medicine has been taken, but apparently it’s not getting better fast. I called the doctor in England, who said to talk to him more to lift his spirits and strengthen his will.”
He paused, “Never, never let the president pass out!”
This time, I don’t know how long it will take to wake up!
Zoey felt like she had never panicked before. She walked over and cupped Jerry Xiao’s pain covered face with two trembling hands, “Jerry, can you hear me?”

Afon looked at the scene and turned around sorrowfully, taking the door with him and going out.

Jerry Xiao only felt that he was in a dream. Because, beside her, her voice was so gentle and light. Completely without the cold hardness and seriousness of the goodbye.
He, again, dreamed …
But this dream, it’s really beautiful …
“Zoey …” he shuddered, calling her. Narrowing his eyes, he saw the worried little face close to his eyes, and with difficulty, he lifted his lips and gazed deeply at her, “You’re in my dreams again …”
He thought he was dreaming!
Did he think he’d only see himself in his dreams?
The words hit the deepest part of his heart, and Zoey choked up. Hand, placed on his chest, trembling, holding his. “It’s not a dream, I’m really here! I really am. Jerry, open your eyes and take a good look …”
Really?
Wasn’t it a dream?
He slowly opened his eyes, and could vaguely see her shadow, reaching out to touch her, he seemed surprised when he encountered the small face covered in tears. His figure trembled, and with a long arm, he firmly scooped her entire body into his arms.
Her face, pressed against his chest. His heartbeat was unusually weak, and Zoey had to listen extremely hard to hear it. It made her feel panic, her hand subconsciously gripped his tightly, almost in a supplicating tone, “You wake up a little bit, don’t fall asleep … I … I’ll talk to you about the child, okay? You must want to know what the child has been doing these past few months, don’t you?”
“Are you afraid I … will die?” He was struggling to speak, and short sentences took heavy pauses to complete.
“You shut up!” She growled under her breath.
The word ‘death’ hurt her so much that tears streamed down her face. Although she had no intention of forgiving him, although she had always held a grudge against him and annoyed him these past eight months, she had never wanted anything to happen to him either! She wanted him to be alive and well! Better than anyone else!
That way, at least, her resentment, her hatred, her anger, all had a hosting direction.
Her fierce tone, in turn, made him laugh lowly. That laugh, still tinged with suppressed pain, was much brighter, and Zoey felt only that reassuring as she pressed against his chest, hearing it vibrate.
He tightened his arms, holding her firmly in place. Even through the layers of fabric, Zoey still felt his body chill, constantly pouring out from within. He began to tremble … shaking harder and harder …
“Is it cold?” She asked fearfully.
“No … there is …” He still didn’t want her to worry. Although … she was probably just sympathizing with herself.
“And showing off! You’re obviously shivering from the cold!” She was so annoyed that she punched him in the chest and pulled the quilt aside to wrap him firmly. He lifted the quilt to cover her with it as well, still unwilling to let go of her. His lips were dark and trembling, and his lower jaw gently rested against hers, “So … it’s really like KK said …”
“Which one did KK say?”
Looking at him cold like this, she didn’t even know what to do. She could only open her arms and also turn back to hold his entire body firmly. Her small face burrowed into his chest, as if she wanted to use it to transmit her body’s temperature to him.
“He said … you’re now, fierce as hell …” He finished, smiling to himself, the corners of his lips lifting in a gentle arc… …
Zoey was about to get mad. But, seeing him smile like this, the whole person seems to be fixed. Forgetting to bother with him, forgetting to get angry with him, she only sniffled, “Yes, I am mean, so you must get better … or else, I will get angry.”
He, really wanted to ask her if she would forgive him before he died.
But …
He, in the end, asked nothing. He was afraid that her answer would make him despair.
“Are the kids asleep already?”
“Uh-huh. They were tired all day and fell asleep as soon as they hit the bed.”
“I envy them …”
“Envious of what?”
Envy what? Envy them that they have her to take care of them like this, to be with them like this, to love them like this …
“It’s nothing.” He shook his head lightly, pausing for a moment before suddenly speaking very, very softly, “Zoey … I, in fact, would love to hear … the kids call me ‘Daddy! ‘ …”
The words came out in broken phrases, and his voice was unusually weak, as he breathed heavily several times. But Zoey could still clearly feel the deep-seated prayers and longings of his heart.
At the bottom of the heart, heavy swirling out one after another circle. She, pursing her lips, leaned into his arms for a long time, all without speaking.
He, his face grew duller and duller, lightless. She, do not agree? But … he really, really wanted, really wanted …
“I won’t take them away, trust me.” He, once again, assured. The words were firm, even a little low.
