Book:The Selfish CEO Published:2024-6-2

Zoey lowered her head, only to feel Jerry Xiao’s tall figure approaching her once again, she curled up like a scared bird, but she didn’t dare to look up, only took out her bag, panicked and rummaged through the drink tickets inside the bag.
“Don’t you want a drink ticket for your drink? Here.” She flipped it out and handed it toward him, the ticket actually stained with a thin layer of sweat.
He didn’t say a word, and after a brief glance at her, he looked down at the ticket, his eyes deep in color. Zoey couldn’t tell what he was thinking at all, and when his hand reached out, she had already drawn her own hand back quickly, as if she was afraid that he would hold her again.
She turned to go out, but his long arm leapt across and braced itself against the door panel, stopping her whole body. She glared at him with some annoyance, what did this man want?
Under the light, however, he just gazed at her calmly and deeply. The whole person had faded away from the danger just now, appearing much more tranquil. Opening his mouth, his voice was equally calm, “For this project, you can ask for a replacement. I also hope to make a clearer distinction between public and private.”
“Mr. Zhan, please understand one thing, the word ‘private’ does not exist between us!” She said righteously.
“Yes?” He looked at her with a serious look, “So that kiss just now was business too? Your company entertains so well?”
“You …” The man, clearly, had gotten the better of him! “You know very well what just happened with that kiss.”
Jerry Xiao looked at Zoey in front of him with such a heavy heart . At this moment, she was no longer the gentle woman she used to be. After not seeing her for eight months, she seemed to have changed nothing, but she had changed everything. Even if she was still a kitten, she was still a kitten with sharp claws.
And these sharp claws were given to her by her own hand.
The hand braced against the door panel slid down little by little. He looked at her, a bit of frustration in his features, “I’ll let you go.”
Zoey looked at him almost disbelievingly, and watched as he slowly tucked his hands into his pants pockets, which convinced her that he was really going to let himself go. For a moment, and no longer as alarmed, she straightened the slightly wrinkled robe she was wearing and forced herself to turn around in a calm and collected manner. Only then did she pull back a crack, only to hear his ghostly voice ringing out behind her, “Zoey , no matter how much you threaten, you can’t stop me from doing what I want to do right now! Since I’m here, I won’t give you another chance to escape – and, our child, child!”
The last sentence, he said extremely heavy, but also very deep, as if with a strong to melting emotion, but also unwavering determination. Zoey listen to the heart trembling, do not know what he really want, but do not dare to stay down to talk to him, only to flee as if running away from the room darted out of the room, and tightly closed the door.

Watching that figure, disappearing behind the door, he almost immediately regretted his impulse to let go of her. Taking a step forward, he wanted to pull open the door and chase her out, but, in the end, he still held back and just chased her figure through the tiny cat’s eye, undyingly. Her slender, solitary figure ran down the long corridor and, finally, disappeared into the elevator.
Didn’t want to scare her, but, it still seems to have startled her …
It was not until, all was quiet again, and the figure had completely disappeared, that he slowly drew back his darkened vision, and threw himself helplessly into the sofa. He looked at the drink ticket in his hand, but did nothing but hold it tightly in his hand.
Now him, what’s the point of having this? His body, long ago, could not withstand the wine.
Sinking into the couch, he touched his cell phone to dial Afon’s number. When Afon picked up, he asked, “Has Secretary Baker left yet?”
“Uh-huh. Tomorrow ask the other Chinese girl who came to the reception for me where she’s staying now.”
“The president is going to her place to look for her?”
“It’s the others I’m looking for. Ask and tell me.”
“Definitely.” Ah Feng did not ask more questions, only hearing the exhaustion in his tone, “If the president is tired, he should rest early. Tomorrow is to approach Mrs. Shamli, there isn’t too much heavy work, the president can completely not need to attend, just leave it to us.”
“I know.” He didn’t mean to be forceful. This body, he himself couldn’t know it better. If he were to force himself to do something, not only would he not be able to do it well, but he would instead drag down the entire team. Nowadays, he didn’t even have the capital left to be capricious and stubborn.
Owen Baker looked once more into the hotel lobby, and this time, finally saw the figure appear. But it was hasty, uneasy, and his heart tightened as he immediately got out of the car and strutted toward her.
Walking up the hotel steps, she’s already coming out of the room, head down, and happens to catch Owen, who grabs the disoriented woman, “What’s wrong?”
At the sound of Owen’s voice, Zoey’s heart, for a moment, settles. She took a deep breath to calm herself.
“Brother, let’s go first, when we get back.”
“Uh-huh.”
Owen Baker gave her a pained look and nodded, pulling the car door open for her.
He walked around to the driver’s seat and sat back down, glancing slightly sideways to see that she was still staring. Sighing helplessly, he curled his fingers slightly and flicked the side of her head. Fearing that she would be in pain, naturally, he didn’t dare to apply any real force.
“Ah!” She whimpered, shaking her head. Owen Baker compared the seatbelt beside her, “Buckle up.”
“Oh.” She hurriedly fastened her seatbelt. Owen Baker then eased the car into motion, and along the way, after looking at her several times, she kept looking out the window at the yellow desert, unsure of what she was thinking.
The sadness and desolation in the look was palpable.
“Want to talk to me?” Owen Baker asked softly, following her lead. Zoey looked sideways at Owen , and even if he didn’t ask, she was going to talk …
“Brother, I don’t think I can take charge of this project.”
Owen Baker was focused on the road, keeping an eye out for what was suddenly rushing out of the desert. It took a moment before he inclined his face, “You’re backing out before the project is done?”
“You know why.”
Owen Baker looked at her deeply, the emotions that welled up had been well hidden from him long ago. In her presence, he had long ago gotten used to caring for her only with the concern of a loved one, “See him?”
“Well …,” she said, her voice, muffled and muffled. Fingers curled together, clenched.
“He’s after you?”
“No, it doesn’t!” Zoey shook her head. How do you chase? Why chase?” For eight months, he hasn’t shown up. It’s also a complete coincidence that we’ve run into each other now, isn’t it? Besides …”
She paused for a moment, her eyes falling ahead, looking at the desert under the streetlights, with an indescribable pallor under her eyes, ”None of us can go back. In this world there is no relationship that can go back, forcing to go back, in fact, it is only a complete change of face. Those broken traces, even if you try hard to ignore, it is still real …”
“A very thorough analysis.” Listening to Zoey’s words, Owen Baker nodded, his gaze deepening, “Then you might as well get on with the program.”
“Hmm?” Zoey looked at him. He’d clearly said that if he couldn’t hold it up, he could let him do it.
“If you really understand so thoroughly, then don’t run away. The more you run away, the more it proves that you still have expectations, and the more he just goes after you. zoey , if it’s true that you can’t go back, then prove it to him.”
Zoey woke up with a terrible look on her face, and the mirror showed her in a terrible state. She put on light makeup before she dared to lead her two children downstairs for breakfast.
At the table, Mrs. Shamley and Owen hadn’t come over yet. She held both children in her arms and sat them down where they belonged, “Don’t eat yet, wait for Grandma and Uncle to come over.”
“Roger that!” KK was hungry, but dutifully stayed put.
“Zoey , did you have a nightmare last night?” Nini looked at her with wide eyes.
“Hmm? No, what’s wrong?” Where were the dreams to be had when you hadn’t closed your eyes at all all night.
“Huh? But I think I heard someone whimpering last night.”
Zoey froze, a little unsure of how to explain.
It’s a good thing that little kids have always thought outside the box, Nini had turned her little head and looked at KK, “That must be KK crying, isn’t it? KK, did you dream that the big crocodile was going to eat you?”
“You’re the one who’s going to be eaten by a big crocodile!” KK expressed his displeasure at being eaten by a big, ugly monster like that.
“What alligator?” Mrs. Shamley smiled and came over, asking as she bent her head between the two children’s little heads, gesturing to them, “Come on, good morning kisses.”
Nini and KK grinned and planted a kiss on each of her cheeks, “Good morning, Grandma!”
“Good boy!”
Mrs. Shamley rubbed both children’s heads dotingly, Zoey had pulled out her chair for her and she sat down and asked, “What’s all this talk of crocodiles so early in the morning.”
“It was last night when Nini heard someone crying ah realized it was KK having a nightmare!” Nini replied immediately.
Zoey couldn’t stop her even if she wanted to, only to hear KK already retorting, “Told you people aren’t dreaming or crying!”
“It wasn’t you, it wasn’t me, it wasn’t Zoey , who could it be?” Nini was so confused.
Zoey was so weak. After lowering her head and setting the dishes, she felt Mrs. Shamli’s searching eyes, she really wanted to cover Nini’s big mouth, “Little girl, go wake up uncle, it’s time for breakfast.”
Anyway, let’s get her out of the way first. Luckily, she obeyed and slid out of her chair with a thud and headed for Owen’s room.
Owen was still asleep and only felt his face being pinched around mischievously by a small hand. He smiled away, knowing that the little girl was getting a kick out of playing and not stopping her. The little girl then got the better of him and pinched his nose in one small hand.
“Roar!” He yelled as he snapped his eyes open, putting on a monstrous grimace to scare her. Sure enough, the little one shuddered and shrunk in fear. But this didn’t let her settle down for long at all, and in the next second, she covered her little mouth and giggled, “Uncle, you’re so amusing Oh … the way you put on a ghost face is still so handsome too!”
“What a defeat for your sweet-talking little girl!” Owen Baker picked her up in a hug and rubbed his stubbled little face against her tender little face. She exclaimed, “Don’t, Uncle, you’re a bully … I don’t want to tell you Zoey’s little secret.”
Hearing that it was Zoey’s secret, Owen Baker hurriedly stopped and looked at the little girl, “Tell me about it.”
Nini put her little mouth to Owen Baker’s ear, “Zoey was secretly crying last night.”
Owen Baker frowned slightly, naturally he knew why. The little girl looked at him with big bright eyes, “Uncle, why is Zoey crying? Could it be love?”
“Maybe oh, Uncle isn’t sure.”
