Chapter 30 Set the Poison

Book:Miss Mystery Published:2024-5-1

Concubine Talbert is Luna’s biological mother. When the Debeur Family matriarch was still alive, Concubine Talbert was the second class servant waiting on the Matriarch. Because she was pretty, intelligent and adaptable, and at that time the side consort was unable to get pregnant, the Matriarch was anxious and let Lord Regent serve Concubine Talbert.
Lord Regent was a warrior but he loves to read. He also writes and was a rather famous writer at that time. So he naturally likes learned women. Concubine Talbert was an illiterate and was unable to win the heart of Lord Regent. Three years passed but Concubine Talbert was not touched by Lord Regent.
When the Matriarch was around, Side consort gave birth to two girls, plus the relationship between the official consort and Lord Regent was not good. The Matriarch couldn’t endure any further. Additionally, Concubine Talbert was a sweet talker and was well liked by the Matriarch. So, on her insistence, Lord Regent accepted Concubine Talbert and she gave birth to Luna.
Although Luna was a girl, this did not prevent Concubine Talbert from loving her. To Concubine Talbert, Luna was her only hope in this life. Whoever bullies Luna is as good as taking on Concubine Talbert.
Once the fight has Concubine Talbert involved, the situation took a different significance.
Grace and Amy are still young, how could they fight against Concubine Talbert who had already been someone’s wife. When Amber hurriedly brought Granny Gordy over, Grace and Amy’s dress were in a mess and were pinned onto the ground by Concubine Talbert and Luna. The other servants’ hair was in a mess and faces covered with bloody scratches, fighting each other.
“Everyone stop!”
Granny Gordy was angry and pointed at the lot, “What are you all doing?”
On hearing Granny Gordy’s voice, Concubine Talbert used her status and shouted back, “Can’t you see that these two are bullying my Luna?”
Granny Gordy laughed coldly, turned and instructed the maids behind her saying, “Concubine Talbert must be sick, what are you waiting for, take her home!”
The maids heard her order and immediately pulled Concubine Talbert. Concubine Talbert shouted, “You bitches, how dare you touch me? Don’t you know who I am?”
Grace who was being pinned down by Concubine Talbert stood up and without tidying herself, immediately gave Concubine Talbert several slaps across the cheeks, “Shut up! Who are you? Just look at that face! You are but only my father’s plaything! Half a thing. Whatever my mother wants you to do, you have to do! Dare to fight with me! Ha!”
Grace spat at Concubine Talbert’s face. Seeing her mother being disrespected, Luna lost all control. She jumped up and pulled Grace’s hair and violently slapped Grace across the face. She even pulled off a handful of Grace’s hair. The pain caused Grace to cry in agony.
Now Amy rushed over and both sisters pinned Luna onto the ground.
Mary had seen enough, turned and said softly to Daisy, “Henceforth, I’m afraid this fourth sister and the other two will no longer see eye to eye.”
Mary already heard about Granny Gordy’s status. Granny Gordy can be considered as the savior of Lord Regent. Years ago, Lord Regent was in battle and was hurt by a poison arrow and pursued by the enemy. When he was out of options, Granny Gordy’s family saved him. Later on because of the plague, Granny Gordy was the only survivor. Granny Gordy asked the Debeur family for help and became the caretaker of the Debeur family.
Due to the gratitude and Granny Gordy’s upright character, detailed in her handling of things, she has never failed in her duties. She was very loyal and had the trust of Lord Regent.
In the Debeur Family, Granny Gordy was as good as half of Lord Regent. At times even side consort’s orders were not as effective as Granny Gordy’s.
It was due to her understanding of this that Mary instructed Chloe to look for Amber to invite Granny Gordy over to June Hall.
Granny Gordy used to work at the farm. She was strong and seeing that things were not right, rolled up her sleeves and pulled Grace and Amy up each with a hand. Like the eagle guarding her young, she pulled the two sisters to her side. Luna, who was now free, wanted to dash over to strike Grace and Amy. Amber rushed over and hugged Luna.
Granny Gordy turned and said coldly to Mary, “Don’t tell me fifth Lady is just standing by the side watching without lifting a hand?”
Granny Gordy’s gaze was very cold and a certain authority to it. Mary must not turn and leave. Since she time travelled here, she intends to survive. Just depending on herself alone is unrealistic.
Mary went over and pulled Luna aside and dragged her into June Hall.
Luna won’t give up, struggled and shouted, “I want these two sluts to pay!”
Mary gave Luna a tight slap, “Does fourth sister want to see Concubine Talbert suffer?”
Luna was stunned for a moment and continued to cry, “Don’t tell me I’m to accept seeing these two sluts disrespect my mother? After all, my mother is considered their step mother!”
“Come in with me first, if you trust me, I do have a way to prevent Concubine Talbert from being hurt any further.”
Luna stopped crying and thought about Mary who recently has the favor of Lord Regent. Perhaps she does have a good plan. She hurried into June Hall with Mary.
Granny Gordy instructed her maids to send Grace and Amy to Dewdrop pavilion. Before they left, she said, “Second and Third Ladies, ponder over what you just did. Today’s incident is too big to be settled just like that. I also do not dare to keep this from Lord Regent. I’ll be reporting to him now.” She said this as if Dewdrop Pavilion has some spirits, without giving Grace the chance to say anything, she turned and left.
Grace stared at the back of Granny Gordy, and spit angrily at the ground, “Hmmph, die already old maid, she thinks that she’s anything around here? Just you wait, one day I’ll take you out!”
“Sister, let’s think about how to emerge unscathed from this incident!” Amy said in despair.
Grace turned around and glared at Amy, “Dare you say this! Had it not been for you, can all these erupt to this extent?” After she finished, she shouted at her servant Molly, “Quick! Go to Prosperity Hall and invite her Ladyship over, tell her that we sisters have an urgent matter!”
Amy buried her head between her knees and said in despair, “Sister, don’t waste your time, I’m afraid that this time even mother won’t be able to save me.”
They are kin sisters after all. Grace still has feelings for Amy, “Don’t despair, no matter what, mother still has some effect on Lord Regent. It is impossible that we escape unscathed but at least with mother’s help, father should be gentler with his punishment.”
Amy shook her head in hopelessness, “Sister, you don’t have to comfort me. Rest assured that this was caused by me and when father asks, I won’t implicate you.” As soon as she finished, Amy cried in agony, “I’m so pitiful, why he betrothed me to that minister’s family’s paralytic son?”
“Don’t panic, it’s just an engagement, it’s a long way to the actual marriage. Who can say that there wouldn’t be changes during this period?”
Grace comforted Amy and said, “Mother has seen and experienced so much more than us. Once she arrives, we’ll have a good discussion with her.”
As Molly arrived at the Prosperity Hall, Side consort was worrying over Amy’s marriage. She confided in Madam Barbosa, “Amy this child, is London city’s beauty and talent. I didn’t expect that she would have such a life to marry a paralytic.”
Side consort already found out, the Minister’s family third son was originally a famous scholar. His works can rival that of Lord Regent’s and he was also very handsome. But tragically, a few years ago he contracted a rare illness and there after he lost the use of both legs. He also became very depressed and pitiful.
“My Ladyship, don’t fret over this, there is always a chance for things to change.” Side consort doesn’t like others to address her as “Second” and most will address her as Ladyship. Lord Regent has also accepted this.
“Have you done what I had instructed you to do?”
Madam Barbosa knows what she was referring to and laughed, “My Ladyship, don’t worry, I’m always very detailed in what I do.”
Side consort said coldly, “Humph, don’t tease me, what did that maid say?”
“She said she’ll consider this carefully.”
“What’s there to consider?” Side consort slapped the table and angrily said, “I am willing to clear her son’s debts and let her daughter come in to serve me. This is already a huge benefit, why, does she think that it’s not enough?”
“In my opinion, unless she is being forced, she may not want to do this.” Madam Barbosa said evilly.
Side consort glanced at Madam Barbosa and seeing her expression, she knew that Madam Barbosa is about to suggest an evil plan. She said expectedly, “Just speak your mind.”
Madam Barbosa acted as if she is being forced to do so, “After all, this will cause some hurt to …”
Side consort was absolutely impatient now, “Afterwards go and take a month’s wages, treat it as my gift to you.”
Madam Barbosa got what she wanted and on seeing Side consort getting impatient, quickly said, “Her son owes some gambling debts and is being hounded to pay up.”
“You’ve already told me this, get straight to the point.”
“My Ladyship, I heard the debtors say that if he doesn’t pay up, they’ll break both his legs.”
Side consort stared at Madam Barbosa, “You mean that we should help them?”
Madam Barbosa laughed and nodded. Just at this moment Molly entered the room.
On seeing the long bloodied scratch on Molly’s neck, side consort asked, “What happened to your neck?”
She knows well the temper of her daughters, Grace was always better than Amy’s. Grace has never hit her servants.
Molly said in tears, “My Ladyship, please come quickly to Dewdrop pavilion, our second and third Lady was beaten up by fourth lady and Concubine Talbert!”
This was unacceptable! Side consort stood up, clenched her teeth and said, “This is preposterous! Those two sluts dare to ride on my neck? What mistress dares to hit my daughters? I’ll kill her! As she finished, she proceeds to look for Concubine Talbert to settle the score.
