“Our target is Proxima Centauri B, which has never changed.”
“According to our study, that planet is the most possible one for us to live on, but we don’t know if there is already civilization on it, and what kind of civilization it is.”
“Everything will happen in space. Since lives appeared on earth, other planets should also raise up lives.”
Chase explained.
The target didn’t change, but the future was still unknown.
“What if there is really civilization on it?” Reba was curious.
Dasin didn’t answer her, nor did Chase.
Chase took out a cigarette. Whenever he was thinking about severe problems, he would smoke.
Even though he knew the harm of nicotine, he didn’t want to drive this bad habit away.
“Do you know the Dark Forest Law?” Chase squinted and touched the screen. Words appeared on the screen.
Reba read with confusion.
“The universe is a dark forest, in which every civilization is the hunter with guns.
He sneaks in the forest like a ghost, puts aside the branches, tries to keep the sound of his footsteps lower, and even holds his breaths.
He has to be cautious because there are hunters like him everywhere in the dark forest.
The only thing he can do as long as he sees others is just shooting.
Others are persistent threats in this hellish forest.
Every life exposing himself will be killed.
That is just the universe.
Only one side can survive, or none!”
Reba stared at Chase with shock after she finished her reading. “Who wrote this? I have never seen this!”
Chase smiled. “Only the Sci-Fi boys know this law. It’s from a writer, and hasn’t been proved yet, because we haven’t encountered any alien civilization.”
“It sounds reasonable,” Reba commented.
“I also believe this law, even though we haven’t met aliens yet,” Dasin said.
Chase nodded. “The universe is much more dangerous than the earth, so the Dark Forest Law is reasonable. We have to keep alert in unknown space.”
“You mean, we’re going to destroy the civilization on Proxima Centauri if so, right?” Reba asked.
“Maybe yes. I can’t leave humans in danger.” Chase nodded and wanted to stop this topic.
He couldn’t promise such unknown matters.
Maybe that civilization was more powerful than humans, and humans had to run away.
Maybe that civilization was weak, and humans could destroy it quickly.
Everything was unknown.
The Hope continued the travel and got to the interstellar medium area.
Sun created one place by its high power in the interstellar medium area.
The Hope was at the borderline between Sun and interstellar medium area, where the speed of solar winds lowered.
The solar winds battled with the interstellar medium, and numerous invisible particles were hitting each other.
The solar winds would lose the war because Sun couldn’t help its winds except for providing winds with gravity.
The Hope took two days to rush across the borderline.
Chase and other human felt complicated as they saw the dim light from the Sun.
They, the last surviving human, finally left Solar System, where humans had lived for so long.
They could no longer be under Sun’s protection!
“Farewell.”
Chase murmured. He even wanted to cry.
They would enter the world of the interstellar medium, made up of hydrogen and helium.
The materials were rare here, and humans would take a lonely journal of about four years.
Chase became depressed for a long time.
He had been absent-minded in one year and ignored the management of the ship.
He just spent much time observing the direction of Sun and was immersed in his memory.
Fortunately, everything went well, and the journal was still safe.
The light from the Sun was weak and slow.
But Chase had found something strange in such dim lights!
It was a planet!
