Chapter 270

The word ‘grave robbing’ popped into my head, along with those movie and TV plots.
But I immediately dismissed my thoughts. It was impossible. Who would rob a modern tomb?
But the tomb had obviously been moved. The lawn next to it could be found the signs of removing, though someone had intentionally restored.
I called Wenbei Su and told him what I’d found. He was surprised and asked what I was doing in the cemetery.
I said I’d just come by and looked around, but I didn’t expect to find someone had moved the tomb, so who would move it? Should we call the police?
Wenbei said no and he would come over right away.
I stayed there waiting for him. I walked around the place, observing other graves, which showed no signs of any movement. Only Nan Su’ s tomb had been broken into.
Wenbei was supposed to be on official business, and I waited for over an hour before he came over. After looking at the site, he was also certain that the tomb had indeed been broken into.
Then we found the cemetery staff to check the tomb and they also thought the same as us. But there was no CCTV at the cemetery to confirm who moved it, so they said they should take the responsibility. They would report to their superiors.
Wenbei, however, said that the matter did not need to be declared. That’s the thing.
I’m a bit confused, damaging the grave itself was an illegal act, how could he forget about it? Since it was his decision, I didn’t say anything.
It was only when I left the cemetery that I asked Wenbei. I said, “Second Brother, why didn’t you call the police or ask for compensation?”
Wenbei sighed, “That tomb isn’t seriously damaged. If it was really a tomb digger, then it would definitely be completely dug out and wouldn’t be repaired for. But you see the bluestone of the tomb was very carefully taken out and put back in place, which means it wasn’t done by a tomb digger. Besides, only old tombs will be robbed. Who would rob a modern one?”
“I know that, but even if it’s not grave robbing, it’s always a fact that the cemetery is destroyed, right? That’s not allowed here. Why just let it go?”
“Since it’s not grave robbing, it’s someone who wants to come and see if the robbery is real or not. Wanted to see if there was my sister buried in there or not.” Sullivan North said.
I got to know him.
Wenbei continued, “If this matter becomes a big issue, then the media will know it. News like this is just too scary. People will then guess what has happened to Su family. Why this could happen, if we did something bad, so that we are retaliated by the weak? This kind of negative news spreads incredibly fast, and it’s impossible to predict what version of the story will come out then. So, it’s better to keep this thing down.”
“Second Brother, does this matter concern me?” Suddenly I had some new ideas.
“What do you mean?” Wenbei asked indifferently. I think he already guessed what I meant.
“Second Brother once said that I look a little like Nan.”
“Yes.” Wenbei nodded, “The first time I saw you, I thought you and my sister looked alike.”
“If you feel that way, then so will others. So, I’m afraid some people are wondering what the hell I have to do with Nan. They even… even wonder if I am, she.”
Wenbei did not speak. He seemed to agree what I said.
“So, someone wants to open my sister’s grave to see if she’s really buried inside?” He looked at me.
“That’s just my guess and there’s no evidence at all. But from the sign, as you say, it hadn’t been dug out completely and it would have been after a few rocks were pried open and they stopped. As for the stop, it’s hard to say. Maybe it was a matter of conscience and they couldn’t bear to do it, or maybe someone came by, making it hard to continue.”
Wenbei followed my words, “Someone’s coming shouldn’t be the reason. First of all, this was definitely done at night, but it’s too unlikely that someone would visit at night. And if it’s a visitor, they would escape or hide. They would never restore the tomb to its original state.”
“So, the person who did this regret halfway?”
Wenbei shook his head, “It’s really hard to say. But who cares about my sister? It must be someone with a connection to Su family. So that’s why I don’t want to call the police.”
I understood him. He was worried that if this matter was pursued to the end, it would end up being one of Su family’s members.
I didn’t know Su family’s situation, and I was even less sure if there was any fighting like Hua family. So, when it came to Su family, I knew I shouldn’t talk too much.
Although Wenbei was nice to me and regarded me as his little sister, I was not a member of Su family, so I couldn’t ask too much about Su family’s affairs. That’s the self-awareness I should had.
I had been uncomfortable since I returned to Nan House. I always thought about Nan’s grave being broken into. There was no major damage, but ultimately it was disrespectful to the dead, and I couldn’t just forget it.
And then later, I received a call from Wenbei, saying that he wanted me to go to the headquarters of Nanhe Group tomorrow. The superiors wanted to discuss arrangements with me for my new job.
I actually didn’t want to work for its subsidiary. Since I had been kicked out once, I was sure there would be a next time. I didn’t want Wenbei to get tired from trying to protect me.
And I didn’t think Yang City was a place that I always wanted to be. I promised him to stay just because I was supported by him and I should be grateful. I wanted to do something for him in return.
The other reason was that I wanted to use his power to get my child back one day. Without his help, I wouldn’t be able to deal with Hua family on my own. Getting the child back was simply harder than anything.
It’s not that I wanted to use him, but the world was too cruel, and the only person I could trust now was my ‘Second Brother’.
I had some sleeping disorder since I got back from Ning City. I was worried my body couldn’t handle it, so I bought a treadmill. When I couldn’t fall asleep at night, I would run. I was so tired of running that I would sleep well after a glass of water.
Most of the time, I was looking through phots in my phone of Alex. I missed him so much, but I couldn’t do anything to make myself feel better.
Ever since I found out that Leon had a new fiancée, all my hopes had been put on Alex. I wanted to see my child and take him back, keeping him by my side. Everything I did was to get closer to that goal.
It’s dark again, and the night was cold. I stood in the courtyard and closed my eyes, trying to hear if there were any bells that Leon once said.
But I didn’t hear it, and in my mind, I kept having visions of him listening to the bell.
I still needed some time to let it go. Only time could help me.
